I was in a 'posh' resturant recently offering 'triple cooked' chips at a premium price. So basically chips reheated twice. They were dire.

I had some of those in a very posh foodie place , they promised the earth and delivered a pair of old pants.

By far the best fish and chips in the country , are to be found at the black country museum , youll need to stand in a very long line and wait for an hour or more , but theyll be worth it.only on sale to visitors unfortunately though.

My recent new second best fish and chips , are to be found at the riverside diner in bridgnorth , although its not actually at the river side , theyre perfect except for the fact that they dont sell real bread and butter , they sell some american bap type thing and that really isnt good enough.:-).

ditchman - oddly enough I had a similar experience. About 2006, I had some business in Milton Keynes and stayed in Whitchurch. Myself and a colleague set off for the pub - just down the road - and came across a fish and chip van. It visited twice a week and had a smell all of its own, but they sold excellent fish and chips.

one of the best chippies i encountered was in a van near Dudley.....cooked in dripping and was fueled by coal ?....loverly evocketive smell ..sort of a cross twixt a steam engine and a resteraunt........

dripping is the way forwards , as with many things in life , it was done away with as old fashioned , people are now waking up to the fact that the old ways are often the best , yes youll die at 40yrs old , but youll die with a full belly and a smile on your face  .

Waldos,Sutton on Sea,Lincolnshire.

Ooh baby.

My in-laws have a house in Sutton-on-Sea, and Waldo's is pretty good.

I used to see a sign advertising coal-fired fish & chips in Sibsey(?), but never stopped. I feel as though it was called 'Greyfriars' - the same turning off the A16 as for the parrot sanctuary.

Pretty good?

They even let you bring your own utensils!

Oh, I see what you did there :good:

PS: according to the Google, Greyfriars is in Stickney not Sibsey. Still never tried it though. There's a coal-fired chippy in Gainsborough called Uptons which is supposed to be a bit special. Again, oi've never beeeeen!
