Friday saw us looking for drillings to attract the pigeons, from my crow hunt on Thursday we were aware of two farms drilling beans so straight to them in the hope of finding birds. These were still being worked and had no birds on them. We zig zaged across Warwickshire and Worcestershire and all we could find was groups of ten or so. We found a massive field which was pink all over its surface with seed and it had ten birds on it and none joining. We ended up at the rape we shot last week and set up at 15.00 and had some steady sport and packed up at 18.10 and picked up fifty pigeons and four crows, as we left the field more pigeons were passing overhead to roost . We had completed one hundred and twenty miles looking.

Saturday was a similar start straight to the drillings only to find the farmer still working the fields around with no bird activity at all. We drove out to the massive seed field only to find it covered with crows and no pigeon , we found out the farmers name but could not get hold of him as he was a mystery to the local farms. So we just kept driving down lanes we have not been down for years in the hope we could pick up a flightline or a field with birds on it. It was now 16.00 and we took stock of the situation and decided to return to the rape we had shot the day before in the hope we could decoy some of the returning birds to roost we had seen the previous day, We were set up on the edge of the roost wood at 17.10 and continued to shoot till 19.30 and managed to shoot forty three pigeons. We had completed one hundred and sixty miles looking so over the weekend coverd two hundred and eighty miles. We always know that we loose the birds to the buds for about two weeks but most years the drillings give us some sport so hopefully next weekend will deliver .

Do you think the buds are earlier this year than normal?

At least you will know where the drilling is for next weekend after your long travels.

Yes , the buds are at least two to three weeks early this year, the one beech tree in my garden has birds on it all day and the another one is just breaking. An oak in my front garden is green all over yet the one next to it is tight budded.

Another example of the hard work you put in, its good for newcomers to see that you don't get big bags without putting the effort in.

Its surprising how many contact us asking why they are not getting 100 birds an outing. :)

Good point! It's read ups like this that give a good insight into the graft put in.

Well done pc
