steve_b_wales
I use a tumbler (Lyman Turbo 1200) to clean/polish my cases, and use corn media. I know that steel pins are designed to work with wet tumblers, but has anyone tried using them in a dry one? I'm wondering if they would work. seeker
From 6mmbr/com TECH TIPS Avoiding Problems with Stainless Media Do Not Use Stainless Media Dry I have had customers call and ask if stainless steel media can be used dry. The answer is that you will not like the results. Everything will go to the media, but it will still leave the brass dirty. If you use stainless steel media dry, you have to run it through a cleaning solution to clean the media. Then, its good to go again. Do NOT Use Stainless Media in a Vibratory Tumbler When using stainless media, you need a rotary-style, liquid-containing tumbler. You want to use stainless steel media ONLY in a rotary tumbler. Do not use stainless steel media in a vibratory type cleaner. Ymmv! Edited June 11, 2016 by seeker
Savhmr
Just wondering why you want to change from the corn media Steve?
steve_b_wales
Just wondering why you want to change from the corn media Steve? I'm happy with the corn media, and it polishes the cases very well. I was just wondering if steel pins would work in the tumbler.
Savhmr
Ah, ok. I use the Lyman too and it does do a good job. When it comes time to replenish the media, your local pet shop can probably provide walnut shell granules for half the price of the corn media. Found a local supplier to me and at under a tenner for a 5 litre bag, it's half the price of the Lyman stuff (or any other similar media sold specifically for the reloader). mick miller
corn tumblers don't really clean the case inside or flash hole that well. Wet tumblers and SS media do. I use the Rebel Tumblers, very good indeed and solidly built.

mick miller
Ah, then you have no need of stainless pins. Save your money Steve.
pork chop
any one thinking of going the stainless tumbling route have a look on ebay for a rock tumbler i got one for £75 and get really good results.
mick miller
That's exactly what I suggested to a mate, after realising that my Rebel and these rock tumblers are virtually the same. I think the Rebel may be slightly larger but I don't tend to clean 400 cases at a time anyway!
rjimmer
My initial thoughts are that heavy media might damage a vibratory tumbler.
Vince Green
Plastic media might be a suitable half way house?
Redgum
I find that wet tumbling with steel pins gives really good results inside and out, made mine with an old car wiper motor I had knocking around, a 12v lap top charger taken out of the small electrical items skip at my local recycling centre, castors off an old chair and a few bits of ebay and a food container from wilko, total price around a tenner. Oh I forgot the media, that was around £20 on fleabay
steve_b_wales
I've just cleaned 120 once fired .204 cases that I was given, in my sonic cleaner, and the muck that came out of them was unbelievable. They are now very clean, so much so that I'm not going to put them in my tumbler.
