Thunderbird
Can someone recommend a good quality B&B, Hotel or a nice pub with rooms on the Dorset coast between approximately Lyme Regis and West Bay. I've heard great things about The Anchor at Seatown but it's booked when I want to go. Anything to recommend?

I've heard great things about The Anchor at Seatown but it's booked when I want to go. Anything to recommend? One of my very favourite parts of England. If you were ever a fan of "Harbour Lights" with Nick Berry as the harbourmaster, it was filmed in West Bay. And some of the cast used "The Bridport Arms" hotel. I stayed in "aunties" room. West Bay is an unpretentious place with a small harbour that has a nice little slipway if you want to take a dinghy. Here's a little snippet of very useful info; If you're coming from Weymouth along the coast road and you turn off and go through Abbotsbury, look for a road called "Butlers Way", Just before you get to the coast there's a car park on the left. It has a brick built toilet block with hot and cold running water. The light is on all night and was never meant to have a door. The trust that is responsible for Abbotsbury and the surrounding area must be very nice people. The car park backs on to Chesil beach via a wooden walkway. If you arrive during the day It used to be around £3 for the day but the gate keeper (loosely termed because there's no gate to the car park) goes home around 5 o'clock so if you arrive after that no one will bother you. Even the next day no one will bother you. During the day there is a small cafe. Chesil has deep water close in so you can catch Mackerel from the beach. If you have a bivvy you can camp on the beach. A great place to go fishing or a stopover if going further afield. I'll see if this link works. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@50.6622009,-2.6071676,15z

I'm a big Thomas Hardy fan and if you spend any time exploring these and the surrounding country in the heart of Wessex you can easily associate the towns villages and landscape to his books... Some think we have gone forward since the early 19th century and perhaps we have to some extent, but I think I should have liked to live in the era of Hardy's books. Enjoy your (s)exploring Dunc. oldypigeonpopper
hello, back many moons ago i caught a big bass off west bay harbour wall but had to drop the rod down onto the beach as it was so big, took ages to land as rough sea 8.5 llb made the camping worth while despite the weather. toxo
That's a very nice Bass indeed. I once watched a chap with half a dozen baited drop nets spaced out along one of the piers. He went from one to the next and in no time had a bucket full of prawns. Haven't been down for a while but this thread has got the juices flowing
