gibby
Had been watching this one for a few days now, he had been sneaking up the same footpath a few fields over at the same time everynight so had baited a few rabbits in my fields. Was stuck concentrating where i had seen him, only to look around and see him appear out of no where about 100 yards away. Was quite light so knew he could see me, so a quick call to get him standing up tall. 103 yards to the boiler! Again down like a sack. Wondering how many dogs there must be around! As you can see a much healthier brush on this one. Well pleased. Bunnies havent been too easy with the grass getting taller and taller. Getting cut next week so shall move onto them, roll on the landy and shotties. Gibby

gibby
What brand of bullet?? I am using CCI 17grain in my CZ Using the same, CCI Gamepoints, can't fault them. can,t believe how many fox,s are seen in light conditions over there Was taken at about 21:00 so ye quite light still, i am the only one who shoots in this area so they have become use to an easy way of living, not for long though. tulkyuk
Nice going mate - the little 17 pills are pretty good at that range, but just about on the limit at 100yrds i think- even though i shot a couple of cubs last years out to 135. keep up the good work Paul
Dirty Harry
Nice going mate - the little 17 pills are pretty good at that range, but just about on the limit at 100yrds i think- even though i shot a couple of cubs last years out to 135. I was shooting the same ammo at 80 yards to a target in a 4" thick wooden stake lase week. the rounds were going through the stake like it was not there. This surprised me as I am new to the HMR but based on this I would he happy to take a fox at 100 or maybe a little further. Nice wrk Gibby

Nice wrk Gibby surprising for a tiny round, put the post at 200 yards and it'll still go most of the way through. I Used a box I found on the farm for practice last year and that had an inch of ply on both sides and another in the middle with a good 6" between each sheet and the bullet was going through all 3 at 200 yards. Makes you wonder where it gets the reputation for exploding on impact from.
pin
@100yds the 17g bullet (assuming 2550fps which is probably a little low) the little pill still has 135ft/lb or thereabouts, more than enough. Even has 100ft/lb left at
Axe
I've just looked on the CCI website and it states that the Gamepoints are 20 grains. http://www.cci-ammunition.com/ballistics/d...spx?loadNo=0052
tulkyuk
I know that they will shoot a lot futher than 100yds, but ment that its about the limit you can kill a fox humanly with a 17hmr, any further than that it would have to be a well placed head shot or run the risk of just wounding the animal and that is not good. pin
Oops sorry Axe you are right there didn't spot that. Tally: spot on mate, I would say 100yd max, some people can shoot a whole lot better than me though
Axe
Pin I think we posted at the same time. I havent used the hollow points yet, though I have heard tail of them performing very well indeed. I think this topic shows that. In my opinion I certainly wouldnt want to go past the 100yards mark, theres just no room for error. The V-max rounds expand very quickly and I wouldnt expect much penetration at that range. I did take a rabbit the other night at 170yards but thats not built like a fox. pin
Slower, 2350fps. Similar ft/lb (250) at the mussel. Slower and heaver = a little more loopy.

tikkamark
I seen a vixon there yesterday evening following a hedgerow at 9.30pm she was a bit far over 300yrds away i will go back this evening and set up on a hill overlooking that spot a bit nearer this time about 150yrds so i will but that theory that they follow the same route at the same time into practice will let you know how i get on :(
Frank
Good result. This 17hmr, seems a handy wee rifle in windless conditions. B) Frank.
