Schmitty
I'm potentially in the market for a .17hmr but after talking to a few people, it was suggested I look at the .17 hornet as the ammo is more readily available (although a bit more expensive) and can be reloaded if necessary. . What's the thoughts of the PW masses?
markm
You will find many started on a HMR then moved to the Hornet (that's what I done). It's more accurate, harder hitting with the same size bullet. It can also be reloaded. Only downside is their is a much more limited range of rifles and they are more expensive. welshwarrior
Check locally if you can get 17 HMR or hornet ammo/components. Personally my HMR is sold and the 22 hornet is back out.

mick miller
How I love my 17 hornet...
Schmitty
Thanks for the replies so far.... Seems like checking the availability of ammo in my area will be the first step.
snow white
Reload your own its a lot cheaper if you are worred about the price but 17 hornet is a fantastic little round.
Schmitty
Not too worried about the price but what is the comparative cost between bought ammo and reloading your own? And how much would you expect to spend getting the equipment required to start reloading?
Dave-G
There seems to be a massive shortage of HMR bullets ATM. Its occurred to me that a good way to drop the troublesome round that frequently gets returned to the dealer is letting the ammo become too scarce for people to keep the rifle. If I was an RFD constantly having to replace and return ammo I'd stop carrying it.
Bangbangman
I, too, made the switch from 17HMR to 17Hornet. Very happy so far, though it's early days for me yet. I reload for a number of rifles, so the Hornet made sense for that reason alone. Setting up to reload is probably only worth it if you will be shooting a lot. It saves money per round eventually and can have other benefits (accuracy and velocity) but it also takes time (to load develop as well as the reloading itself.)
