Redgum
I use varget for 308 and 223 but use Viht for the 243, both powders give good accuracy and consistancy but due to availability vowed to change the 308 & 223 to viht powder when the varget ran out ( had two tubs). Just starting to see the bottom of the varget tub now but my RFD seems to have plenty of Varget again. Viht is cheaper and have a good local supplier though I will have to work up the loads again which I wouldn't have to do with Varget. Is it generally hard to supply across the country, is it much better than Viht, your opinions would be appreciated.
Walker570
Of all the deer and boar I have shot I have not had them notice the difference. It is annoying when you get a load which seems to suit your rifle and needs and then you cannot re new the supply. W760 and 748 spring to mind. I have used both powders ...obviously Viht comes in different grades, Varget is Varget. Both makers powders do the job for me as does the Reloader stuff. With intermittent supplies, it just happens to be what I can get.
phaedra1106
In general Viht is usually much easier to get hold of, for most mid-weight bullets N140 does an excellent job, and you can get it in 1, 3.5 and 20Kg tubs Edited December 31, 2016 by phaedra1106
Bangbangman
I have used Vit N140 for 308Win, 223Rem and N160 for 243Win. All good. However, it's good to have options so I have Varget, CFE223, Benchmark, TR140, etc loads, too.
Redgum
Thanks for the input, I think I will keep with varget while I can get it, in the reloading manual its the best pressure/velocity powder for 223 and 308 plus I have very accurate loads for these but there is really not much in it performance wise. There is some talk of the Viht factory being up for sale, found that info while researching this subject on the net, not sure if its old news or not. Viht however is £68 for a kilo, Varget being £96 for the same from my nearest source ( though widely on sale for £88 per kg slightly further a field, this is working on 500gram tub prices @ £44 )
phaedra1106
The Viht plant was only one of many and that was a few years ago, hasn't affected production at all. In 308 it produces excellent loads and has less recoil than Varget, given the rising cost of importing/shipping powders those coming from the US are likely to get a lot more expensive over the coming year, especially as some are manufactured in Australia and then shipped to the US and then here. Distributors are also talking about large price hikes for primers as well. Ramshot powders should be a stable supply as they're made by P B Clermont in Belgium. cervusman
Vit N140 has the same burn rate as Varget. I use N140 in my 308 for 600yd target shooting and N160 in my 243 and N133 in my 223.
phaedra1106
Vargets burn rate is much closer to N135, slightly slower are N540 then N140. Burn rate alone doesn't indicate another powders suitability so it's always worth checking the latest powder manufacturers data which nowadays is handily available online
Vince Green
If you can get Vhit 140 for that price buy some anyway because its going to go up, sure as eggs is eggs. Think of it as an investment Edited January 5, 2017 by Vince Green

Vince Green
Don't get too over obsessed with burning rate in isolation. The chemical composition of the powders may well be different enough to severely alter the amount of "power" produced per grain
Bewsher500
http://www.hodgdon.com/PDF/Burn%20Rates%20-%202015-2016.pdf Well Hodgson seem to think its slower....
Redgum
I'm now committing to viht 140 due to price and availability, its ideal for the 308 and my only concern was the 223. Not worried about using viht 140 in the 223 now as many use it and I don't go down the barrel screamer route. Thanks for all the good advice, I will let you know how I get on. reggiegun
I would worry more about getting hold of bullets now, heard Sierra bullets going to become hard to get hold of. Just bought some Sierra 150gr Soft points £42, they gone up abit in price
Redgum
crikey they have gone up a lot, I think I paid £32 a 100 last time I bought some, luckily I snapped up 500 and still have 200 gamekings left but will be a shock when I run out.
