Okrang
Usually used to identify trees that are being monitored as part of a survey e.g. when the growth rate of a tree is being tracked, the girth of a tree is measured periodically over time. By giving each tree a unique number, it is possible to accurately monitor whatever it is that is being studied.
Bigbob
We use them at work as part of a tree trail so folk (TOWNIES) can look at the pamphlet see a matching number and see how a mature tree should be
bear-uk
Our Council has marked all Mature trees so it easier to identify, and if they ever get lost they can be returned without any stress.

andypaint
I thought it was preservation order numbers, given to the tree.
scotslad
It can vary from estate to estate but many estates now will mark and number every tree so they can inspect it every so often for insurance purposes so there is a paer trail stating that tree was healthy etc on such a date, so if it falls down and hurts someone there not laible as have showed due care Not all trees with a TPO will be numbered/marked only way to fin out if a tree has a tpo is throu the council (sometimes online now)
