Shooting on new Land with Closed Ticket

I have been offered a long range shooting lesson by a friend up North and he tells me that is doesn't matter that I have a closed ticket for my .243 because the land he will be teaching me on is cleared for up to a .308 and I am his guest so I do not need to inform my FEO etc. Is that right?

Yes, as long as the land is cleared for your calibre or above and you have permission to shoot there.

As per the conditions on your FAC. "On land over which the holder has lawful authority to shoot and deemed suitable by Chief Officer of Police."

I must admit I had assumed I would need to inform my FEO but I guess normally when you get a new permission you have no way of knowing if it has been cleared. But as a guest it makes sense that there is no reason to ask the FEO because it is definitely already cleared.

As long as you have permission to shoot there the land is cleared for the calibre you are using (the emphasis is on you to make sure) then crack on. If you know the post code of the land you can phone the firearms licencing office of the county and get them to confirm it on the database.

As long as your friend has the right to grant permission (He is owner, tenant or game keeper) you are good to go.

If he only has permission, then the above needs to grant it ^

A quick call to firearms to satisfy yourself would only take a minute though.

My firearms tram tried saying I needed to send in a permission letter stating I could shoot land. My reply was my certificate asks me to check lands cleared and this is to 308 so I won't be sending anything In. I got s phone call the day after to apologise and I was correct. If your on a closed ticket you just have to make sure the land is cleared for your calibre. They can't argue that if all it asks is it's cleared:)

The wording is clearly there on your certificate. There's nothing on there about informing them of every place you shoot. It's the FAC conditions you need to comply with, not the whims of various firearm teams.

Give them a ring to check the land is in fact cleared and make sure YOU have permission to shoot there rather than just your friend and you are good to go.

:) I go through this just about every week for the last 5 months. I ring and they ask who owns the land and where is it. They check and cant find it on the register. I try a different name or spelling and sometimes they find it. The records are appalling I would like to see how they are kept.

Keep annoying them with all of your land and hopefully they will grant your open ticket nice and early for you mate
