Guest rabo
last nite i checked out were i left two rabbits lying around, it was starting to get dark, leaned over a gate had a look through the scope and this fellow was coming up the hedge/fence sniffing about leaving his scent on every second post,it was hard to guess the range i thought it was further out than he was,he started to come fairly quickly my heart was beating like it never beat before, tell the truth found it hard to keep steady,he was gettin to close so i give a bit of a squeek with my lips and he stopped and looked straight at me, i let him have a federal vshock in the upper chest,he dropped like a sack of spuds. he was 80sh yards out.it,s been a while from i had a buzz like that. jamie g
i dont mean to sound funny lads and not having a go in anyway. but shouldnt the hmr only be used for head shots on foxes as a body shot should be left to centre fires rifles ? Why please? thanks for the response lads im well pleased jamie g,.do you not think you have a better chance of killing a fox with a body shot than a head shot,it,s much easier to miss a brain than it is to miss the boiler room.a couple of inches out and you take of a lump of a jaw,the body shot is a much bigger target, check out rimfirecentral.com usa see the size of the coyotes they are killing with the hmr with body shots. stevethevanman
Great shooting , as for the 17HMR for foxing, I havent been on hear a long time and the subject is talked over quite frequently, brain shots are harder to take than chest shots, but if the animal is at a range were you know the bullet is gong to go exactley were you want it to go and your accuracy lets you take the shot, there is no reson why it cant be taken, 17hmr is more than capable for foxing at sensible ranges, the picture proves it
pin
It's annoying when people say daft things, like essentially saying a rimfire round can't do what a centerfire can, when talking about killing a fox. Foxes are not big animals, foxes are not tough animals. Someone shoots a fox with a .22lr, nobody bats an eyelid, someone shoots one with a .17hmr, its all "ooh should you be doing that??!!??!" bunny bagger
I've shot foxes in the chest, sideways on at 70 yards with a 22 lr and killed them outright but I've also hit them in the chest much closer (say 25-30 yards) when they've been facing me and had them run off, its a case of know your weapons capabilities as well as your own and only shoot when your confident of a clean kill, no matter what calibre gun your using. Well done Rabo, the excitement and adrenaline rush are always there no matter how many foxes you shoot
pin
im not saying the hmr isnt a good round m8 but up against a 223 centre fire its not in the same league when taking foxes out though the chest See, you've done it again .17hmr, fox, chest shot, dead fox. .223, fox, chest shot, dead fox. Difference? Apparently you've heard the .17hmr isn't any good for this and don't know why, but have said it anyway, not having a go or anything See my other posts, the .223 is a much more suitable dedicated foxing calibre, in fact smaller rounds make very suitable foxing calibres (222, .22 hornet etc). People don't criticise the users of those just because another round will do more damage. Much more important is the ability of the user, whatever calibre, to select a suitable target, backdrop and know he has the tools to safely take the shot and dispatch the quarry.
