keeper96
Speaking as a keeper I'd say it's more likely he's got his auto with a cartridge sticking sideways out of the breech with the bolt closed on the head of the cartridge (think breech flag) All the keepers I work with regularly do this to show the gun is safe/empty

welshwarrior
My view gun should be open and empty ie broken or bolt back and no cartridges in the gun this means a cock up cant happen and the gun accedential fired as the cartridges are in your pocket not the gun. wymberley
Pre 1980's gamekeepers did point shotguns at trespassers and my grandfather had a side by side pointed at his head and he reported it to the police and when asked what he did he replied "i relieved m'sel". Now that same gamekeeper is still working at 70+ years and has had his guns taken off him recently three times but gets tbem back as his boss pulls strings for him. At one time he could have seen the shot size.
activeviii
I'm busy having a debate online with some ramblers, following the HIT "animal persecution" footage currently doing the rounds. As ever, it's descended into a general "all shooters are evil" type argument, and one is claiming to have been approached by a keeper holding a loaded shotgun. As a lowly beater, I'm not totally familiar with the finer details of guns: is it possible to be able to tell just by looking, whether a shotgun is loaded? The rambler type claimed he "could see the cartridge in the breech at the side of the gun". Very simple. Its someone that knows nothing about guns, likes to think they do and needs to add a little to his story to get the reaction. tell enough people a story and you will find one person that will believe it and then a chinese whisper was born. My advise, Ignore, walk away, don't get involved. you cant educate stupid.
ShootingEgg
It all boils down to the dislike of killing in the context of a sport. That also wraps in with the classed perception of only toffs shooting. If you went to one of my local clay grounds, most are game shots to, not one toff, even the owner is a country boy just making a living
