Vehicle storage options

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have a small 4x4, with side opening tailgate whose boot space isn't wide enough to lay a shotgun across whilst in a slip. My current thoughts are to buy a break down case and make a shelf for the dog crate, so the case can slide underneath. Second option is to make a set of drawers to put the gun in, again crate on top. My question though, is living in a suburb, how would I carry it out of the house and load the gun into the draw without it being obvious what it is?

I'd prefer draws but the case seems the most subtle option. How do you load your gun drawers up at home if your in a 'normal' street.

Any thoughts please?

I used to live in continental Europe and we weren't alowed to have the shotguns assembled until you arrive at your shooting location. Even in the gun safe they had to be broken down. So the shotgun would go in to a holdall/gym bag and no one had any idea, even though I lived in a very urban environment.

Must admit I'm with motty but then again never lived in a big town and always knew my neighours and most of the street so it was never any secret I shot.

I'm sure mst of ur neighbours don't really care that much u could carry it with a jacket over it or roll it in something to disguise the shape a bit, just a bit of common sense really.

U won't regret building a shelf, really handy I done that in my last 2 pick up's great for storing water proofs and every thing else and still could get dogs on top.

Dunno how good a joiner u are to make drawers, I didn't even attempt it so I done in the 1st was just cut some ply/floorboard the same width as drawer would be and screwed some bits of 2x2 to the end so when u pull it out it pulls every thing with it, actually worked quite well for all it looked ruff.

In my 2nd more refined attempt I bought some cheap plastic storage boxes that fitted the space and bent a piece of metal to fit behind the back ox as it was too far back too reach so u pulled the metal bar which ran in the grooves of the load liner to get back box out. I could off done it with a rope or something tied on to it too but the bar worked well

Both versions were a bit rough and ready but were more 'functional' and worked great the plastic boxes wit lids worked really well and looked reasonably tidy, althou the draw back was I used to just carry a rake of junk about that I never ever needed !

make a case that you put the broken guns in and the use them I to a draw in the rear of the 4x4.

I had a garage with a side entrance so nobody ever saw me loading/unloading.

I have a Children's Nursery outside so it was sensible and on the advise from my FEO to get a side door fitted. With the roller door being remote it's was very discrete.
