JDog
Yesterday I met up with Mightymariner and his son for a spot of pigeon shooting. We had both seen the forecasts for the local area which said rain until 1 pm then cloudy but fine with strong winds for the rest of the afternoon. We met at 12:15 so we had time for a look before setting up. There were good numbers of pigeons using the rape stubble. The usual problem was where to go, especially as there was a small field adjacent to the larger one which had pigeons on it. MM was kind enough to offer me first choice and I set up near a dog leg in the field where pigeons had been feeding in the rain. He chose to set up at the far end of the field on a flight line. We put a rope banger in the small field. I was set up by 1:30 in the rain and my kit was soaked immediately. However pigeons flew into the field and I had a hectic first hour when I fired 40 cartridges but I was getting wetter by the minute. MM had little joy in his original position and moved to another line in the shade of some large trees. The rain continued. I thought that the forecast might be out by an hour but no three hours later it was still raining when I packed up. As soon as my kit was packed away the rain stopped. I joined the other intrepid shooters in their hide to watch for the last half an hour before they too packed up. There would be something over 70 soaking pigeons to take to the game dealer. 7daysinaweek
I commend you for your perseverance jd, many of us would have would have opted for the dryer option of home much earlier i am sure? We also have had a fair dousing last few days, however today looks much brighter and good for the coming days. My perms still have standing wheat on from being drenched earlier in the week, still waiting for it to come off. From the pictures i can see it was a fair old soaking. Is that a large willow at the front of the house? if so it would be happy with the heavy rain. atb 7diaw
Mightymariner
Good summing up there. My truck is filthy, inside and out. Max enjoyed himself despite not hitting much. We'll all be out again soon.
marsh man
You are a one off Mr JDog , drive 40 miles on the off chance there isn't anyone all ready shooting the intended field and then sitting in the rain for three hours and not soaking yourself but everything else around you . At the moment you are suffering from beginners enthusiasm , you wait till you have been doing it for a little while and then maybe you will think twice before you make those rash decisions , or will you Well done to you , mm and his lad , you certainly all deserved a nice lot of shooting for sticking it out in the rain .
