sishyplops
Hi all I've been invited out for a duck shoot on the marshes in November , I have a beretta a303 that has a 3" magnum barrel, obviously it's not HP steel proof , it is fixed half choke I have never shot ducks before but done plenty of game and pigeons, can you recommend me a cartridge to use in my old beretta Much appreciated Edited September 23, 2017 by sishyplops
motty
32-36gm of 2,3,4,5 of steel. Gamebore super steel or mammoth are good choices.
lancer425
Brilliant guns the 303s has a chrome bore will be fine on steel full choke or not with any ammo you can buy in this country. 3.25mm is what is size of shot i have seen recomended but i shoot 4mm in a similarly choked fixed full Franchi with no ill effects after 17 years of steel. I buy RC because i can get it from Cecil Coates most of the time but Gamebore mamoths are popular as are eley lightenings and salway steel i used BB salway steel when i had nothing reloaded for a number of years pre the RC ammo found it acceptable and one other option could be the NSI ammo i have not used any 3 inch but heard it mentioned possitively by a guy the other day could be worth a look. johnnytheboy
Just out of interest, I have never seen. 3" a303, but maybe I haven't been looking in the right place, are they readily available? In terms of 32g steel shoot Gamebore super steel is readily available and good, however fiocchi 32g steel is something to be believed, is is simply superb! The 35g should be voided t lol cost but not the 32g!
sishyplops
A 3" magnum barrel to fit the 301/2/3 is a pretty rare thing, I've been after one for a long time Looks like gamebore mammoths it is, is the gun suitable for geese? I have killed a lot of ducks with them. I even shot a few pinks with them last season. Do you base the effectiveness of a cartridge on its speed ? Kraai
I have shot canadian geese with gamebore super steel nr 4 en nr 3 and even with black gold steel 28gr nr 3 out to 40 m i dont understand why you people make all the problems about cartridges...if i let my hunting friend read this he is thinking you go hunting elephants with those cartridges that most people talk about...you dont need een 50gr bb to shoot a geese at 40 m
lancer425
I think many would agree with that statement on inland decoying on stubble fields , but when you look your sport on the shores esstuaries and rivers where you have to consider tides and your dog getting the birds out last thing you want is a bird wounded this and the ranges often involved dictate the use of a heavier load for coastal shooting, but i do agree inland field shooting is an all together different thing, and you can use lighter ammo if you want to and are wanting to shoot them at closer ranges. I have killed a lot of ducks with them. I even shot a few pinks with them last season. Do you base the effectiveness of a cartridge on its speed ? Why wouldn't it be suitable? No not at all. I shoot a small selection of any cartridge I buy over the chrono as you know from my test, but the rest are used in the field and my comments reflect my personal use. I used the fiocchi 32g on driven duck last year and this year I shot duck and crows with them and they have given seriously good results. The 35g I found to be giving me more cripples. There have been a few reports of the 35g shearing off just above the brass and the outer plastic cartridge getting stuck up the barrel! If I was to buy any steel other than Fiocchi 32g it would be Gamebore super steel or rio BlueSteel both of which sit in the middle of the test speed wise but have given me good results. Ive never got on with the RC Atomic in 70mm in both sizes or the RC3 all of which are faster than the gamebore and Rio. The side effect of the chrono test is having a huge amount of cartridges to shoot game with!

Well 40yrd is 40 yrd no matter where you are eg middle of London or Stubble field or foreshore. The reason people struggle on the foreshore is simple they shoot at Birds out of Range - Beyond there capabilities - Don't hit birds front end . I'm not Digweed but kill plenty of foreshore Geese each season using 32gm steel from a 12ga or 1oz Steel from a 20ga in fact I've had 5 shots at foreshore Pink's this season so far killing a Triple and Double using 3x 7/8oz Steel 3's 2x 1oz Steel B's from my 20ga all killed cleanly 😊👍

Gerry78
Gamebore steel or any cartridge you fancy as long as you point the beretta in the right place at the right range you will get clean kills to many on here love and hate certain brands go with your gut feeling as you will shoot better making your own choice Sishyplobs I only shoot gamebore as ive tried must brands and have been happy with Gamebore cartridge When i do miss i cant blame the gun or the cartridge give the Birds lead and you should be good to go Steel not like lead what i do have a opinion on is you do have to drop a shot size shooting steel Good Luck at the end of the day Enjoy getting out on the Marshes
