freddie d
Hi all, I have just bought a Winchester SX4 and noticed when I fire it sometimes I can hear the spring in the forend ringing after each shot. I get this is a common thing in semi-auto shotguns, but finding it quite distracting at the moment. Do any of you have any ideas to how this ringing noise can be reduced, a heavy grease on the spring perhaps (although that may harbour dirt)? I am sure I will bet used to it, but wondering if any of you have any ideas. Cheers
TIGHTCHOKE
Blimey it must be loud if you can hear it through your ear defenders.
Me matt
Could be your ears ringing, I went to electronic ear defenders when I moved on to semis.
a303
Beretta A400’s have a metallic “ching” noise when cycling too. Benellis “thud” Beretta 391’s go “boing’ and a Browning double auto is like firing a giant spring.. all autos make some sort of noise. You’ll get used to it. figgy
Try a long recoiling pogo stick, wabbitbosher describes the sound perfectly. Only worry if parts start spring out.
freddie d
Yea used to shooting benelli's so this chinging noise/vibration is minimal with those
Guest cookoff013
DO NOT USE GREASE IN THE STOCK RETURN SPRING. USE HIGH QUALITY LIGHT OIL ! its in capitals for a good reason. and i am shouting as i type.
figgy
Fully synthetic engine oil is good to use on guns, it takes the heat and any gasses well.

I'd also add resist the urge to slather oil on the piston and mag tube etc. It'll burn/scorch carbon up the mag tube terribly and sand will stick to it

freddie d
well, I decided to try a rubberised spray on the spring. Gave it 4 coats and now the spring doesn't vibrate against the mag tube, stopping the noise and it still cycles fine.
