Ir and snow

Had the strangest thing happen last night. Sat up the tower waiting for a fox and there was an absolute white out for about 20 minutes enough to  totally cover the ground, about an hour after it stopped I heard the geese run so I picked up my NV spotter and found the fox about 60 yards away it was trotting left to right and looking away at the geese. As soon as I spotted it and without it looking up at me it took off and ran off the field like it had been shot at, never turning back at all. In the past I've had foxes react to IR but they have always looked at the source this one didn't, and I only had the IR on its lowest setting.

I've never witnessed it myself but that doesn't surprise me in the least. You'll not be needing IR in the snow unless you specifically want to see eyeshine.

Forgive me if I blow my own trumpet by saying that's one of the benefits of having the illuminator in a separate circuit - as they are on my NV rigs.

Another covert feature is that both switches are almost impossible to hear when activated at arms length.

Must have given it a good fright as it didn't come back for two more nights. It came last night so I will give it another go tonight hopefully with no snow.

Well that was a wasted night. Got set up at 11pm and at 1.05am I got a callout from work. ( A heating problem on another farm 38 miles away) got back at 4.15am and guess what the fox had been and gone. I will try again tonight.
