AYA117

Yes, G.T. was of an enquiring and open mind.

Really enjoyed his AYA XXV in later years.

Think he shot with a Winchester 101 if I remember right.

Below is Nel.

My rough rustic French peasant!

All rust when she came to live with me.

Mot much better now.

Had to make a top lever spring.

Locks up tight

16 bore, 27 1/2 inch tubes.

5 3/4 pounds.

Seems to be made by Verney Carron.

Fits like a glove and would be ideal for ferreting!

I Like her!

No class but I Still like her!20250219_113114.jpg.a7396f4c7f96a54c859f502fce036052.jpg20250219_113125.jpg.d8f423394b2493a0550c6873a26eb313.jpg20250219_113132.jpg.d5356600586c281a91ac4dac07151647.jpg20250219_113147.jpg.9f87b919494f617b3ff8a47ddb049387.jpg

My two, although the lowermost, 16 bore, has now gone to auction. Both late 1920s Manufrance Fusil Robust 28E models. French guns are either cutting edge or almost sublime and superb or absolutely bloomin awful.

I've owned one of two. The Unique company made good guns and the MAB P-15 was a better gun than the Browning P-15.

Problem is though like everything if you are first everybody says "Wow". Thus the 1886 Lebel rifle. But if you are second or third you get it right. So on the heels of the 1886 came the 1888 Mauser but behind that was the 1895 Magazine Lee Enfield.

They both look very handleable guns, Enfield!

Hope the 16 does you well!

I dont know how I would describe mine.

Feels good ..lovely triggers...

I do have a Manufrance 12 in bits at the moment. Need to make both mainsprings!

That one is a number four whatever that means.

On the inside the work is as rough as a badgers a**e, but its tight and handles well.

The one above handles so well its hard to put down!

Nice damascus

I see that Vintage Guns are selling a lot of damascus guns now, presumably as owners are worried about steel

I hope they go to good homes kevin!

Its a sod, so hard to get them over here, and going for not much over there!

I think l like these old stub iron twist barrels as well as the later two- three stripe Damascus.

All very bonny in their own way!

I’ve a nice Frederick Williams 3 stripe Damascus barrelled gun a boxlock non ejector with a scroll backed action ,it’s a lovely gun . Cost a bit more than average due to its condition but as you say a lot of these guns will probably be changing hands for little money. I’m hoping my gun will pass into good hands that will appreciate it after I’m no longer able to use it.

Konor,

I know things are changing, but would much rather have a gun like you describe than a new one with no character!

It would be very nice to see it if you could get some pictures taken and put up on this thread.

All best,

Rich.

I’ll look it out and post one up Rich 👍

As I was taking some photographs for Pukka Bundook thought I might as well photo and post these. Gun is a Parker reproduction by Winchester made in the same factory as the 101s 23s etc but brought into being by Tom Skeuse who I think was a director at Winchester . Through a firm he created and with the blessing of Winchester he supplied the Olin Kodensha factory with a vintage Parker shotgun had them copy it and produced 12 20 and 28 bores before the factory closure brought production to a halt.

Still one of my favourite guns and well looked after my AYA number 3 magnum probably heading off soon to be bored out to half in the left barrel and used on the foreshore on duck. At present being used inland.

Thank you for posting all these pictures of these lovely guns, Konar.

The Frederick Williams is indeed a lovely example!

A mate on another forum goes by this name, as he has a wildfowling gun made by Williams. (8 bore double)

Lovely barrels on your gun and action so nice with the scroll back. Lovely stock too.

Congrats on you finding each other!

the Win, repro Parker is a grand piece as well.  How do you like the single trigger?

It looks altogether high end work., The stock looks beautiful work and very comfortable!

I am pretty new to a 16 ga, and must say it feels so slim and light, I can't think why they are not more popular than they are.

Mine are not as nice as yours but handle so very well.

Re AYA's, they have always been Very well put together, regardless of grade.   Yours looks ideal for the coast.

Thank you again for showing them.

Rich.

You’re welcome Rich. I was lucky with the Parker reproduction,a Winchester rifle collector from Knutsford bought it then decided that it didn’t fit in with his collection after a bit and decided to sell. I travelled down to view it using it as a good excuse to have a couple of days away. I think that Tom Skeuse’s company bought a lumber yard in California to source the wood. The single trigger wouldn’t be my first choice on a side by side but it works great and as I shoot over and unders too I’ve no problem using it. It’s great having the freedom and opportunity to pick and choose I’m hoping the section 1 worries are just that and will blow over. From your previous posts I can see you’re a big fan of the side by side ,after I mounted the Frederick Williams gun my first thought was why would I want to shoot anything else if you can think that you’re a lucky man and if you have a few like that you’re blessed.
I was given some 16 bore cartridges when I was a lot younger and the memory prompted me to investigate 16 bores about 15 years or more back. I bought a Ferlach made gun deep rabbit and deer engraving and a cheek piece and kicked terribly, solved it with a thick pad then traded it for a twenty bore over and under Classic doubles Skeet gun  for my son which will probably be in the next Holts sealed bid sale due to lack of interest. Anyway I picked up an AYA number 4 16 bore at auction lovely weight and condition but cast for the left shoulder. I had that altered and enjoyed using it so much that when I got the chance of the AYA number 1 decided to go for it. No regrets despite barely being able to justify it. It won’t see steel shot.

Is that skelp barrels on your Pritchard ,that’s a cracking gun and the browning sets it off well. I’d the chance of a similar barrelled local gun in as new condition offered for a pittance when a grandfather was looking for funds to pay for a clay gun for his grandson. He wanted £400 and when I said I wasn’t interested and that the gun was worth far more he dropped the price to £300. I now wish I’d bought it at a fair price but can’t go back now unfortunately.

atb,

John

Lovely looking gun ,I’m a fan of the pistol grip. Is that an AYA 722 . That was a possible option for me as I fancied a pistol grip stocked gun late last year.
I had gone up to look at a 25 inch barrelled gun but the AYA caught my eye.and the slimmer barrels and weight and just the way it came up had me parting with double what I intended spending. Luckily I’d sold off some things at Holts and that covered the difference.

John,

way up the page now you mentioned a Ferlach 16 bore.

Fairly recently l bought a  vintage German 16 bore, and have yet to fire it!

it has the sears set up in a different manner to the normal  A&D, and the trigger pulls are lovely.

it's  a Suhl gun, and has  the cheek piece you describe.

whether if kicks I don't know!

It comes up very nicely though.

Maker Emil Kerner if I remember right.

Cocking indicators. and About 1920.

Lovely deep Germanic engraving very similar to the Ferlach proofed shotgun I owned. I think the barrels were around 27 inches but were an exact standard length in centimetres if that makes sense. I thought when I wrote rabbit hare would be more accurate and yes the hare on your gun is the image I remember. There was a fox and a roe deer too. Chambers were 2 and 3/4 and I was told by someone at the time that the cause of the recoil was steeply cut forcing cones although whether that is correct or the real culprit was fit or a combination of both I don’t know, it was a non ejector well finished and seemed a lot of gun for the money at the time. If i remember correctly there was an ebony wood insert definitely at the drop points and may also have been at the Forend tip. It was a straight swap at the shop for the Classic Doubles 20 bore Skeet gun ,a ladies gun that had barely been shot. I think we both thought it a good exchange at the time.

Good morning Konor,

Yes, the Germanic engraving is very different to British!

Big and bold and a bit crude, but like it for the door it opens into another world.

My surname being Hare, I sort of Had to buy this one, LOL.

It has poxy barrels but a lovely stock. will endevour to take pictures.

Mine was only around a hundred Pounds delivered.

29 1/2 inch tubes.

It is hard to say who got the best deal with the Ferlach and O/U 20!!

I think you both did well!!

Here is a snippet re. the alterations to the A&D often used by German gunmakers....
