tignme
My shoot bus a grand Vitara lx7 has shed a timing belt. My mechanic replaced said belt and there is a noise from engine. He says he needs to remove engine to check what damage, maybe a shot valve. Does the engine need to come out.
walshie
Not to check if a valve was damaged. He should be able to do that with a compression check and at worst, remove the head.
B391
Could be piston damage as well
bornfree
Compression test would be the first thing to do.

Cyrus1988
If the compression test shows that 1 or more cylinders are down on pressure then you could follow it with a cylinder leak down test. This would help pinpoint if it’s the intake valve, exhaust valve or piston rings that are damaged.
Gordon R
There will be more room to work with the engine on a bench, but it seems a bit hasty. If the problem is in the cylinder head, then the engine can stay put.
Saltings
take engine out to work on and while its out weal fit a new clutch just in case £++++ makes sense as the engine is out . I would pull the rocker cover off and check valve clearances first if bent the offending valves will have a larger clearance than recommended , I would say valves are bent if running rough given what you described , take the head off new valves and seat / skim head +full gasket set + labour may be cheaper to swop engine from a reliable downer vehicle
