ritz
Hi Guys, as the FAo person is coming tomorrow, just wantd to maek sure where I am supposed to store these? Does hiding them in a good place count? or do they have to be in a safe that is bolted to something?
al4x
hide them in a safe place is fine, you also don't tell the FEO where they are as he even shouldn't know. Mine are on my car keys and kept safe when at home and when I'm out they are with me. Just have them in your pocket when the FEO comes he probably won't ask you to open the cabinet

chunk
I keep a spare set hidden, and a set on my keys. I am always contious of carrying my keys. Feos are happy with this. What you need to be careful of is letting on to your wife/girlfriend etc where your keys are. Its not unknown for FEO`s to turn up when you`re at work and ask to check the guns. If the cabinet is opened, clearly a non certificate holder has access to your guns. People have lost the lot for this. Cheers Andy.

LEFTY478
Buy a digital safe with numbered keypad from 'screw fix' or somewhere similar for about £20, problem solved. What he says. Your FEO will be than happy with that. I've got one and keep all security sensitive items like cabinet keys, spare car and house keys, parports and jewellery etc in it. Your insurance company will be happy, too. If you're worry about the wife having access to the cabinet keys, simply get her SGC too. Then she can takes the guns home after the day's shooting and you can go to the pub with your mates. Win-win situation, for you.

Piebob
What's an SCO? It's my understanding that FEOs will NEVER, EVER turn up at your door for an unannounced inspection. In fact, haven't the police recently re-enforced this message as a result of recent cases of gangsters trying to get access to guns? But the advice is sound, don't tell anyone where your keys are kept if hidden, but better still get them locked away. The last time I was in Woolies (a few weeks ago now right enough) they had an electronic safe, with bolt holes and bolts, for £15 (half normal price). Offer might still be on. WeihrauchPower
On the same sort of topic. I keep one set on my main keys and the other hidden. I'm yet to have my safe checked and have two firearms stored (Australia). I was told that the Victoria police are very strict on checking the safe within the first month of acquiring a firearm. When they come the safe must be opened before them and rifles checked for no.s which obviously correspond to the registration docs. I've found this way of checking and sending permissions to aquire a bit strange! I'd like to add that they are on the money, when it comes to actually having a full licence granted to begin with over here.

I've heard theat Victoria is the strictest of them all when it comes to Firearms law, is this correct? And NSW is slightly more liberal on it? Personally I think shooters in the UK fair slightly better than their Australian counterparts. Through its not by much. Puts me off applying for emmigration when I qualify as a Pharmacist. NZ seems like a shooters paradise in comparison. . Hi-cap shotguns . Pistols . Centrefire semi autos Am I missing something here? mr_colt. Wookie
When I get to the new house I'll be getting a smaller safe for docs and keys, but as I am moving very soon, I'll carry on hiding them where even the cat can't find them! Sussex Countryman
If the FEO comes calling when you are out and/or without an appointment, I am sure you are within your rights to refuse him entry and ask him to make an appointment when you are in or it is more convenient. mr_colt
The BASC would say yes. However it's up to you if you think its going to affect future dealings with the licensing dept. The line they may use if they don't like it is that you were not: "Reasonably Cooperative" with the licensing dept. This however just does not wash with the law and home office guideance. But when has that ever stopped the police? mr_colt.
