Negativity of gundog training

Has anybody encountered any negative comments while out training their dogs?

Twice this week I have been out with George and have encountered what can only be described as a craggy sour faced old cow bag with her yappy out of control lap dog. She's taken it upon herself, after I took exeption to her dog having a go at George while doing some direction exercises, to label me a disgrace and that training my dog is cruel, when all they really want to do is 'have fun'. Her little westie's idea of fun is approaching every dog and child screaming it's little head off.

Of course non of these comments are directed at me, but loud enough for me to hear. The best part of the whole debacle was her comment to her friend, after I'd given her a piece of my mind, of "look how he's dressed, he thinks he's going shooting". I afforded a little smirk to this.

To be honest i dont have any probs when im out at the present time, but people do look and even come over and have a chat,as they are interested in what im doing .....throwing the dummies etc.

I do have a neighbour a few doors down who thinks i am very harsh on the Springer.....yes I growl at her sometimes..and they call that harsh. (And that goes for both of them <_< )

I once tugged my Lab back from the edge of the road at Padstow going back a few years , thought it would better to give him a tug rather then get hit by a car...and this old biddy started to give me some grief...told her to mind her own business straight away.

Cheers

I was out on a quite country lane a couple of weeks ago with the dog, she was off the lead walking to heal, next thing this one pulls out in her Chelsea Tractor loaded up with kids, so I grab the dog and stood back into the ditch to let her pass. She stops and says "ahhh your giving the poor dog an awful time" so I says "I'm only pulling her in off the road so as you don't drive over her her", well she didn't like that so so she ****** for herself, nosy cow.

Some people are just thick stupid best not to take any notice of them.

For lots of reasons, its best to train your dog as far away from other dogs (and people) as possible.

The only adverse comment I have ever had was about 20 years ago when a neighbour at one of our previous houses, complained to the Council that I kept my dog "in a run".

My springer was in a 15' x 20' fenced, concrete run, with a kennel in one corner.

"Someone" from the Council and an RSPCA Inspector knocked on our front door and after telling me about the complaint, asked to see the "run".

I told them in no uncertain terms that my dog was fit, healthy and kept in excellent accommodation.

I also told them to go away and come back with a "search warrant".

They never came back, so I assume they found some way of looking into the back garden and seeing that all was well.

I have occasionally. I always handle it with a reply that consists of every word my parents told me not to say as a child, used randomly at volume 11 (that's one more than 10 berrettaman) I find this better than trying to explain to an idiot why I have a dog by the scruff of the neck.

If they are dog owners I point out, politely, that they may be better suited to owning cats.

This ends all complaints and any further contact.

I have had problems like this, folk tend not to understand whats required of a working dog and what it takes to reach any standard in the UK (not Canada) as Cranners says keep away from others at all cost unless they train with you of course

just a thought she may have objected to you calling your dog George <_<

Fortunately I've had nothing more than confused expressions from people whilst out dog training, though I do try and get her well away from the more travelled areas.

It's the same with many anti's and do gooders - for every one who is willing to listen to why you do what you do there are about five who think you're some kind of animal and are completely ignorant and unwilling to learn the reality.

Eejits, the lot of 'em <_<

I took my 10 month old out to work the other day and he done something wrong I did not want him to do so following advice I asked for on this forum which was to take the dog by the scruff of the neck and hold his head to the ground while saying no. I did this in front of two of my fellow workers both female, and they said "dont be so harsh on him he only a pup" I said to them how else is he supposed to learn let him do watever he wants to do and be disobedient.

Dogs in the past have always been trained to help people like protecting and herding livestock, shooting and hunting, and other I cant think of. But not to sit in all day and go out for a 20 min walk.

Often bump into other people when training him.

Make it plain and clear that I am training him for the gun.

Get lots of positive comments about "how nice he is" and "hes well behaved".

Only had one bad "bag", when he was not responding to his stop whistle and he wanted to go a play with their little lap dog....you know the type.....that gets carried when they take it out for a walk.......she was giving it grumble grumble grumble....keep your dog under controll etc etc......I asked.....why,,,,should I be carrying him....

I tend to let him have a play after we have done training with other dogs to let him socialise.....

Happened to me once. Was out with Max, just up the road, when one of these jogging, head wired newly moved in townie girl ran up just as Max ( I did let him go into some brush) cam back with a Mixy rabbit and dropped it in front of me, right in the middle of the lane! Her face turned into a grimace that can only be described as TOTAL HATE and I could hear something like "that is disgusting" coming out of somewhere between her teeth.

I smiled and walked away.

You just can't talk to idiots
