myuserid
I watched a program the other day which was made in the US, they talked about deer slugs and buck shot, which looked lethal Haven't seen anyone supplying these in the UK so I take it they are prohibited ammunition? Windknot
In the UK section 2 (ie. SGC) ammo must contain at least five pieces of shot, which my not exceed 9mm in diameter. So you can buy up to OO buck with your SGC- that's SG shot in the UK (or very nearly so.) But you can't use it on deer, except in some prescribed instances. Baldrick
I have some Express Super Game 36g SG buckshot for shooting foxes at close range (inside 30 yards) through full choke. They pack a serious punch, but the gaps in the pattern are huge. When I'm not using a centrefire though, I now prefer to use 42g #1s instead, as they are more dependable. njc110381
I've shot with slugs at the range, but I can only buy them for use there. I'm not allowed to take them home. It is possible to get them on FAC for practical shotgun, but I wouldn't bother. They do pack a serious punch though, both to the target and your shoulder

CharlieT
They are not prohibited. The simple answer is if you can show a need, then yes, you can get them on a fac for deer.

Are they fast enough for deer? I know the power should be good enough, but they're pretty slow!
CharlieT
MV 1800 feet per sec. They group about 4" at 100 yds Faster than I can run and catch them !!!

Correction, should be .36 which is LG shot, the largest available commercially in the UK.
Hardy
Ah our American friends get all the interesting goodies A few years ago a mate brought me a cataloge back from the US from the Blammo Ammo Corp (genuine name but I seem to have lost the book) which had all sorts of exciting rounds in it. They don't seem to be going still but found some of thier offerings for sale online at Exotic Ammo. Not sure I'l like any of them going through my barrels though!! I think some may be a bit ott - like adding the Pepper Spray to the Rubber round - like your eyes won't already be wartering after getting hit by it! leeboy
Its a shame we have so many restrictions. The Americans can shoot 3 1/2" OO buck and all manner of solid slugs. They also have Dixie 'Tri Ball' 3 wacking great pellets that will throw a six inch pattern at 50 yards+ Personally though, in my experience SG shot (OO buck ?) is pretty useless for anything past 20 yards as the pattern spreads too much to be usefull. I tried them for fox several times but found that BBs or #1 were far better. You can have slugs on a FAC for shooting deer in certain circumstances. That depends on the slug. There are slugs made for full choke barrels, slugs made for open choked barrels, and slugs made for rifled barrels. Harnser
I have used rifled 12 gauge slugs on numerous occations in the states .In new york state you cannot use a rifle on deer ,and have to use a shot gun and slugs .The slugs are very effective on large white tailed deer if you place the shot in the correct place ,through the shoulder into the heart and lungs .This shot will stop a large deer almost instantly .The trouble with slugs is they are not as accurate as a center fire cartridge and they lack the killing range of a .308 so you have to stalk in close or wait up a tree stand .The slugs are leathal but not as versatile or as leathal as the good old .308 . In my experiance ,140 grain .308 is as sweet as it gets for any large size deer .If you want more power, then the 130 grain .270 is the boy .Iused one for years ,but now that i am older and wiser ,to much gun for uk stalking . Enzo
myuserid, the solid slugs are FAC only. I'm only allowed to hold 150 of these at any one time....!!! The largest 'shot' cartridges I can purchase locally are gamebore Buffalo S.G. These hold 9 (yes, I've counted them as the cases are clear) pieces of 8.4mm lead shot. Powered by 32grms of powder. Allowable on SGC. Haven't yet tried 'proofed' glass or plastic with the solid slugs, but the SG's do tend to shred at close range. If you want some piccies of shells posted, just shout. Harnser
Enzo , I think you mean 32 grains of powder and not 32 grams . Obviously a typing mistake . I think 32 grams of nitro shot gun powder would put you into orbit . Harnser .
