WWII Wire Cutters

I picked up some ex-army folding wire cutters at the car boot sale this morning. The ordnance arrow is marked on them, but there are the initials CHP next to the date (1944).

Any thoughts on their meaning?

Manufacturer? Regiment? Unit?

They need a little fettling but I was happy for £2!

There is a similar set there from WW1. Yours should fold back by the looks of things. Those are made by Carrington ? There may have been different sub contractors manufacturing them to a standard pattern.

Had another look on the web

Based on the markings on a WW1 Wirecutter, which are :-

C. H. PUGH Ltd

BIRMINGHAM

ENGLAND

Yours must be the same manufacturer. They also made the rifle mounted ones. Interesting the number of different patterns and makers.

They were still being issued and used well into the 80s. My issue clasp knife was issued in 72 and stamped 1944. I have it still. My golok (tree beater) was stamped 1944 unfortunately stolen in its also 1944 sheath about 5 years ago along with my original to me, second hand mess tins stamped 1945.

Lots of still good ex MOD gear around at outrageously low prices if your lucky.
