Hi gang.

Is it best to put a bit of tape in the mounts to protect the scope from scratches or just put the scope in the mounts.

I have mounted a few scopes in my time but can't remember what i've done.

Just had a look in mounts and there is a tape in them already.

                                                                                                                                  Thanks all.

The mounts are made to exactly match the diameter of the scope, one inch or 26 mm or 30 mm or whatever. Putting tape in them will alter their correct inside diameter and could, I think, cause crimping of the tube.

Exactly the correct answer from London Best

And which is why you shouldn’t really bodge mounting a scope if you can’t get it to adjust as you’d wish by shimming the rings. There’s tight and there’s tight and then there’s torque drivers. The advised figures of c2nms - rings and c4nms - bases which can both be on the high side will astound many.

Having looked at the mounts, the tape in them looks like they are rubberised and slightly tacky as if the mounts were meant

to have them there.  I have mounted the scope and will zero it in on Sunday and see how it goes.

Thinking about it i have had mounts before with and without tape.

Yep, common enough. The tape can often have a gauze-like apppearance
