Conor O'Gorman
A debate on the shooting season for woodcock held in Parliament yesterday saw MPs push back on claims made under a petition instigated by Wild Justice. Briefings from BASC, GWCT and CA were used by MPs to good effect. Tedward
Hi Conor, I watched this, and my understanding is that it is a “talking shop” only with nothing being binding to any party. However, at the end of the debate the lady chair took a nominal vote and decreed “the eyes have it” My question is what exactly do they have ? cheers, Tedward. The “Ayes” agreed by acclamation to the proposition that the petition had been considered. So nobody bound to do anything.
Tedward
So just a “talking shop” then ?

I think I'm correct in saying that it all goes into Hansard (the parliamentary journal) - so in the future, what was said will likely be drawn upon / influential to further parliamentary debate. Fellside
The more money and time these three stooges waste without result - all the better.
Tedward
Conor, WildJustice are trying to put a different spin on this : Woodcock debate: on Monday afternoon our petition calling for a change to the Woodcock shooting season was debated by MPs in Westminster Hall. This came about because nearly 108,000 people signed the petition - thank you all! The Defra minister, Trudy Harrison, broke the news that Defra has asked Natural England to look at the case for changing the shooting season. This is good news and we are optimistic that this very important change might be achieved. If it is, then 108,000 people who signed the petition deserve most of the credit. - your thoughts ? regards, Tedward.
holloway
My understanding was that Natural England would now look at it and make a decision based on the facts and science.

At the end of the debate, Environment Minister Trudy Harrison concluded that “Natural England will be making recommendations based on the science”. As stated by CA in their review of the debate - "if it does so, no regulatory change can be expected because it cannot be supported by the evidence currently available". It would be good if all of our governments and associated bodies in the U.K. would follow the science when considering matters of this nature. Very clearly the SNP/Greens haven’t on such matters as grouse and mountain hares.
