marsh man
Looking on the after sales I noticed the member was selling a couple of old hammer guns , these were in proof so I dare say they were leagal in selling them and good luck to the op . I have got an old Midland Gun Company hammer gun that was proofed for Black powder and have got damascus steel barrels , I don't no longer want it and a few cartridges would square the deal rather than going in the melting pot . Would it be leagal to give it away , swap it for a few cartridges or sell it without it going to a gun shop to be checked over ? , looking at it , I would say it could be used but I would say it is more suitable as a wall piece. THANKS MM
Andy H
If the barrels are pitted I would have it checked.
Centrepin
I think it depends on the buyer and his use for it, especially if its advertised as "worn". Let the buyer beware and the price be the guide. Incidentally if it's 12bore, and "fair" I'd be interested as an occasional fun gun for when we have a SBS day. 50 bird shoot. I'll be in Norfolk, Gressenhall, end of June start of July should you decide to sell.
Scully
You can either give it away, swap it or sell it for what it is, a black powder shotgun, assuming it’s still in proof for black powder. You only commit an offence when you SELL an out of proof shotgun.
marsh man
THANKS for all the sound advice , so if I don't surrender the gun to the police I would need to have it checked over by a gun smith to make sure it is still in proof before I decide what to do with it , Thanks again , very much appreciated

Fargo
If you plan give it away beware it’s hard to give to police ( well for me it was when I tried get rid of a Merkel o/u) as they wouldn’t take it and all local gun shops wanted £25-75 to dispose of it

Ring 101 and get the details of the nearest station that has a property store. Contact them and explain what you want to do and when you'll be calling in. Upon arrival, leave the gun in your car, tell reception and someone will come out with you to bring it safely into the station. Its all logged in and you are given a reference number which you add to the normal notification of Disposal notice and sent to your FLO. No charge and very efficient. THEINVISIBLESCARECROW
I would give away to a fellow shooter or rfd before police, no fault of their own but at some stage it might end up as anti gun propaganda ie dangerous weapon taken off the streets etc.
Keith 66
About ten years ago I gave a nice old Birmingham made Wm Mc Loughlin hammergun away, It was out of proof & pitted. Bloke that took it couldnt bear to see it handed in. Recently i told him to scrap the poxy thing! No point getting sentimental nowadays.
