Evil Elvis
Just had a great days shooting with my mate scott.W. We went to my "usual" permission and started off squirrel bashing , missed one then say no more, just as i was coming to the end of the wood a pheasant ran out and took off, of course, i was in the thick woods so i missed him, blasted the bushes well. I suspected that he had flown over the railway and to the other end of the farm. There were a few pigeons about so we made our way to the hide and shot a pigeon and a squirrel on the way. Once the deeks were out, they started to appear in dribs and drabs but enough to keep us interested, we shot about 20 before we called it a day. We decided to walk through the wood on the way back and shot another squirrel, then scott almost trod on a male pheasant who shot off over Scoots shoulder and inbetween the trees, as he went through a gap in the trees i put a 32g no 6 up his ***.....literally! Dropped like a stone, dead on impact.......woooohooooo!!! i have shot many over the years with airguns but never a shottie!!! So I was well chuffed. On the way back to the car we got another 4 squirrels, a pair ran out in front of me, bang, one down, bang two down...then a pigeon flew over as i shot the second squirrel and i got that too, making and interesting mixed trio!!!!! Here he is all wrapped in smoked bacon ready for sunday dinner.......cant wait!!! When i say i shot him up the ***, all the buckshot was in the giblet and rectal area.....none at all on the meat so it should be a buckshot free experience!!!!! Suffolk shooter
One of this years brood by the look of the small spurs. Lovely colours on it though. We have Old English Dark Necks on our shoot and they weigh approx 4-5lb undressed. Big birds. Damn good flyers though SS
Evil Elvis
I thought he was quite heavy for a pheasant, he must have been 3-4lbs....but his crop was bulging with acorns, at least 30!!!!

Evil Elvis
He was still warm when i plucked him, is it better to let them get cold first? i did tear the skin a couple of times. Try the squirrel next time but best shot with 1 pellet rather than a couple of hundred Once i get my fac through i might do that....any day now................I have shot them with sub 12ftlbs and its never that humane even with a clean headshot....prefer that extra oooomph to drop them stoney like!!! Brisa
Good job, had a scare with one this morning when out on a shoot. Stalking up along a hedge row to a tree filled with pigeons, a pheasant was resting on the other side of the hedge and I must have startled it taking off over the field with a right bit of noise coming from it. Needless to say the tree of pigeons emptied for the rest of the time I was there.

Evil Elvis
Stacks of them....what wrong with that?As far as im aware theres no law against it is there? Except for a few with thier noses stuck up in the air.....whats better? a pheasant with loads of buckshot in it or a buck shot free bird with an airgun pellet through the brain? i know which id rather eat!! young airgunner
had you not read the guidlines set down from basc for airgun quarry. i know that an airgun is a clean, humane way of killing them but it is generally frowned upon. anyway you shot this one with shotty so well done for that and sounds like you had a great day out with plenty of shooting james
MC
Give the guy a break will you, He gets slated for shooting a pheasant with a semi auto, which obviously isn't a 12 bore shotgun and must fire some kind of cartridge that just isn't cricket, if you know what I mean old fruit. Then you have a go at him because he is using an airgun. BIG BL***Y DEAL There was 2 people using senmi auto's on the shoot I beat on yesterday and noono said a word, does it really matter to anyone apart from the purists who go out decked in tweed and carry an old tyrelever side by side which they cannot hit jack with. Better a clean kill with a semi than a dozen pricked birds all over the countryside because someone can't shoot. Unless you hadn't noticed the year is now 2007 and that is in the 21st century, we can now fly in aeroplanes and send people in to space. Evil Elvis
Unless you hadn't noticed the year is now 2007 and that is in the 21st century, Thanks Martin!! i know that an airgun is a clean, humane way of killing them but it is generally frowned upon I dont mind frowned upon, thick skinned, and young enough to still be slightly rebellious, lol, besides I actually prefer to use the airgun if i can, the meat is safer to chew!!!, its not often you get the chance on my permission as they see you long before you see them usually!! What I failed to mention was that all the pheasants I shot with airguns was over 25-30 years ago, Im sure the basc airgun guidelines didn't exist. My father was an engineer in thurrock clay plant in ockendon, they had 100's of acres of land that were overgrown disused pits.My dad would drive along in an open backed landy, see a pheasant and if it tried to hide by lying flat he would pull up next to it and i would shoot it at about 5-15 yards range with a bsa mercury! I rarely missed and none suffered!! Sometimes my brother and I would just jump on them, grab them and Dad would ring thier necks!!! I should also mention that my parents were relatively poor and no meat went to waste!!!Great lead free meat!!! One interesting sight that we would see over there was a massive, and i mean massive flock of green budgies, literally hundreds and hundreds!!!...didnt eat any of those!! henry d
He was still warm when i plucked him, is it better to let them get cold first? i did tear the skin a couple of times. Pheasant are notorious for tearing when warm or cold so don`t worry, just take your time especially when plucking the larger breast feathers.
