Shotgun Certificate renewal advice please,

Recommended Posts

I’m renewing for the first time when a medical background check is required. I won’t be using my own GP practice and  understand a private company can provide this for a fee. My question is, do the company who provide the medical background check send it to me and I include it with the renewal paperwork or do they send it directly to the police. Thank you for any help / advice.

They send it to you and you can be shocked by the things you never knew were in your records!

I requested my medical records from my GP and, through BASC, sent them to another GP to examine them. He then signed the proforma for the police and returned the records back to me. My own GP wanted 'nothing to do with firearms etc'

cost me 30 quid from own GP and it took less than 3 days.

i payed at reception when i picked it up.

as an aside, when i found out that this was being implemented several years ago i asked the doctor who owns the practice what his feelings were regarding shooting sports and was pleased to learn he was a keen clay and game shooter but not rifles.

he was eager to learn/talk about what i did though.

Is there a reason you don't want to use your own doctor

Not really, when I found out private concerns offer this service. I thought it may be more straightforward. I guess a phone call just to enquire may be worth a try.

Your own doctor  may be quicker for you

Email your practise asking if they will do it, the manager will probably deal with your enquiry and get back to you quickly. That’s what I did, got a reply same day and 1 working week for the form to be ready. £40 paid at reception. 👍

I handed the renewal form in to my Dr and got it back less than 24hrs later. I was charged a small fortune, slightly more than medcert but it was quick and painless. My dad’s Dr don’t charge at all and some refuse to do it but until you ask you won’t know.
