He is going to throw money at them. Scotland is an economic wilderness. High unemployment and long term sickness. The ship building has gone, the mining industry has collapsed. Their fishing industry was ruined by EU quotas and the distilleries sold off to foreign investors. The oil industry is in rapid decline and Milliband has now pulled the plug on any future exploration. Most of the land is not suitable for commercial agriculture. Too hilly and poor soil. The climate doesn't help. The hills used to be covered with sheep but not any more. The price of wool has collapsed and the increasing cost of feeding them through the long winter ihas made it impossible to show a profit. So what does that leave for the future of Scotland? Well there is the tourism, but that's never going to be enough. Its also very localised to specific areas. Last time I was up in Scotland all the staff in the hotel i was in were Eastern Europeans , yet there is high local unemployment? Why get up at 5.30am to cook breakfasts in a hotel when you can stay in bed and live off Universal Credit? That says it all really. I will be back up there Tuesday, Argyll and Bute.
