Christmas, full of tradition, Christmas Tree, Decorations, Crackers, Paper Hats, Ridiculous Jokes, Turkey, Cold Turkey, More Turkey, Presents, and that good old favorite early evening past time....cracking nuts!

Strewth, we've had some funny shaped nut crackers in our house over the years. Some have died a death and some stood the test of time. Currently have the ships helm wheel screw type cracker works best well for most. Hardest nut to crack....has to be the good old Brazil that Brussels have banned! God I miss the anticipation of all that hard work only to pop the Brazil in and have that drying, devastating, almost vomit inducing taste that is a nut gone bad. Still it never killed me, so come on Brussels lets have it back please!

Anyway , I found that there is a host of varying nuts available, besides the usual. Generally we stick to the norm with Hazelnuts, Brazil (shelled) Walnuts, Almonds (My Favorite) and Pecans. Oh and not in the bowl but toasted chestnuts.

So whats makes you nuttier than a fruit cake!

I didn't know they'd banned Brazil Nuts - did they give a reason?

To be specific, they banned unprocessed Brazil nuts. In other words you can still buy a Brazil that has been shelled and processed but not one that has to be 'cracked'.

Apparantly the Brazil nut can contain a lethal dose of aflatoxins which can only be tested for after the nut is shelled. Anyway, why after 38 years of me chomping a self cracked Brazil nut and still able to breath(including the gone off ones), Brussels decide they are deadly, is beyond me!

Heres some interesting reading....

The irritating ********. I also seem to have survived a childhood surrounded by lethal exposure to unshelled Brazil Nuts. I also don't recall anybody else writhing on the floor in agony after eating one

It was an art form, getting them out in one piece, hours of fun for all the family

Who needs sticky-backed plastic and toilet roll holders

Hmmm, love wall nuts and pecans, used to work on a ranch in the US that had a few 1000 pecan trees, used to be sick of them then.

Hard to beat a hazel nut and chestnuts.

If you like almonds then try this.

Slice them in half length ways and pop them in a frying pan with a drop of oil, hardly want any, and a few chillie flakes. Add more if you like them very hot.

Gently brown them for a few minutes and then into a bowl with a good twist of maldon sea salt and eat. Very moorish snack and goes down a treat with a beer.

There you go Axe. Obviously you are one of the lucky ones who managed to survive before we were legislated to death!

Please be aware that at this time of year there are all sorts of hidden dangers waiting to strike, dead tree beanches waiting to fall, undercooked turkey, ice on roads, the list is endless. I advise everyone to stay home and watch TV!
