When getting some rolls out of the freezer this morning I noticed some forgot about Christmas fare , another packet of the dreaded Pigs In Blankets and a packet of Bacon , Leak And Winter Herb Stuffing Log , so took it out and made a tea up , t b h it wasn't bad , beans were just alright , tomato's were tasteless and the oven chips were done a good ten minutes more than stated on the packet and they were ideal , the small bit left over will be a snack tomorrow if the dog don't eat it first .

Not up to your new great standard MM 🤔 And those chips definitely don't look fully cooked,,,, you might have something wrong with your cooker/oven 🤷‍♂️

The chips were in the oven a good ten minutes longer than stated and I did turn them over half way through , they were alright but not as Brown as yours normally are , the tomato's were from M + S and had very little taste , I don't normally like a lot of beans but they had been in the cupboard ages and getting near the sell by date so I used a tin up , I might take the rest to the super market and put them in the food bank , the stuffing log would had been nice with a Chicken but I do seem to eat a lot of Chicken so I gave that a miss MM

That looks alright that MM.

Are they 'Branston' beans!

No , sadly not , They were Heinz , I don't eat a lot of beans and these were getting near the sell by date so I used a tin up , the rest will go down to the food bank so someone will make use of them , my wife used to buy the small tins just for herself but they were just as dear as the larger tins so she bought them in packs , I have got about a dozen tins but hopefully they won't get wasted .    MM

At least they will get used up MM, and to a good cause. 👍

Looks nice, but in the winter months, tomatoes are always pretty lacking in any flavour or sweetness.  A splash of balsamic vinegar and some salt and pepper can work a bit of magic.  The meat loaf looks nice.

I don't worry too much about the "best before" date on tinned goods as long as the tin is in good order.  I have had a great many tins of beans and only once ever had one gone off (had internally pressurised) and it was very obvious.  It was not out of date either.

Well done.   :good:

Good to see you've sorted the chips out, I would happily eat that plateful.

I can't see the "dreaded" Pigs In Blankets?

The Bacon, Leak And Winter Herb Stuffing Log looks interesting though, I would try that and the baked beans are a good side order.

Wrong time of year for tomatoes I'm afraid, just a bit of colour and garnish, you'll be putting a sprig of parsley on the plate next.

Thanks for your tips , always taken on board :good:, I should have know better with buying the tomato's , they were on offer at M + S and now I know why , I bought them along with two different cheeses so I could have a cheese and tomato roll , the thought was there but again I never got around doing a roll , the cheese was a strong 6 year old Cornish vintage reserve and the strength said No 8 profile , nice but a bit on the strong side , the other one was Wensleydale and Cranberries , now and again I have a little impulse to buy something different , this is mainly when I see the item reduced .

The dreaded Pigs In Blankets are still in the freezer , these are slightly different to the last two packs as they are twice as long as the previous ones , they will come out over the coming days as I spotted a single bit of a piece of fish with bread crumbs so I will combine the two together , got the duck breasts tonight along with a nice Apple pie and custard just to keep the cold out of the body parts :drinks:

I try and give constructive tips and living alone and doing all my own cooking I have learned by my mistakes (but not poisoned myself yet)!

I love tomatoes, but winter tomatoes are poor compared to summer sun ripened tomatoes.  I also like my cheeses, but generally stick to ones without 'additions' as I have never really found an 'added this, that, the other' that has improved the cheese.  I have tried cranberries, pickled onions, chives, chillies.  The only one any good at all was the Double Gloucester with chives they used to do, but not seen it for a while.  I like a strong mature Cheddar, Leicester, and most blue cheeses.  If you want extras - you can have a pickled onion, gherkin, Branston type pickle etc, all of which are nice with cheese as is onion marmalade.

I agree, the only cheese with extras that I like is a Cheddar with some ginger in it.

All the others I have tried have not been worth my time.

Good old mature Cheddar and most of the blue cheeses that come out of the fridge to warm up are my favourites.

Far to much choice nowadays , we were brought up on either Red Leicester or a mild Ceder and if we had one from overseas it would be the Dutch Edan , this would mainly be at Christmas , now the deli counters are full of cheeses I have never heard of , now and again I try one and don't like them enough to think about trying them again , we also used to try the various ones at the country fairs , they would offer you a small bit and for some reason they tasted all right so my wife would buy a chunk , getting back home it was soon forgot about and that was the one and only time we  would buy it , now when I buy the odd bit of cheese it normally go hard before I finish it off . all in all I am no longer a great cheese lover    MM
