Welsh shooter
Can I find out/get advice if it is a bad idea to release pheasants out off the release pen into more open ground, they will have hedge lines to run up and the cover back in the pen. Aim is to push feed them to the top of the hill. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Welsh shooter
it will be in to quite an open field no crops. as per the image, feeding them up the hedge line, red being the pen.
Weihrauch17
You ideally need to release them into cover where you can try and feed and hold them, that to me is the worst case scenario. Having said that mild winters and a none reliance on Wheat killed our shoots ability to hold birds.
jall25
We do something similar - works grand We have good cover at the top of the hill - have you ?
old'un
Need more details, as been asked where are your cover crops? What is the surrounding area like, woods, more open fields? How step is the hill? How far from release pen is your flushing point? If its a shallow hill will the birds get any height in them before gliding down to the pen? Lots of question really. old'un Posted Saturday at 09:09 Report Share Posted Saturday at 09:09 2 hours ago, Rim Fire said: They will end up in that wood to the right of his picture Yep, looking at the amount of woodland surrounding that release pen I think that once the birds get into that they will be lost, the woodland at the bottom right, next to the release pen looks a perfect place for birds to be lost in, the only thing I can think of is he is planing to feed them up the hedgerow and into the wood at the top of the picture as he said there is no cover crop where the blue arrow is, he will have his work cut out holding them there. Be nice if the OP came back and gave us some details.
Welsh shooter Posted Monday at 15:10 Author Report Share Posted Monday at 15:10 Apologies I have been away thanks for the comments. The plan is to put some game covers at the top and create 2 drives feeding left and right. It is a steep hill grazed by sheep. We do have another option to use an old and established pen (red square), then feed them through the woods and along the hedge line to 1, create 2 drives. I am concerned that if we use this pen then the birds will just curl straight back to it and not down to the bottom of the hill to the blue square. The woods have been hugely thinned out (where I have circled 2) on the right hand side so it could give us an option to fly them through the trees (pink arrow).
