gmm243
Morning, After loosing my greenhouse glass twice in 12 months due to high winds I was wondering if there is viable alternative to glass? Was thinking of perspex but think it may cloud over time? Is this still the case and does it take long for this to happen? Delighted for any advice. Thanks. JKD
A common replacement for greenhouse glass is 6mm perspex. It may require more cleaning than glass though.
ditchman
dont worry about the perspex going a bit cloudy...it may benifit the plants as it will defuse the sunlight a little bit............old boys years ago used to whitewash there house glass to stop the plants getting bleached/scorched.........dont forget poly tunnels work that way as well ... mrpip
Last year I got a 12ft X 8 ft greenhouse for my allotment from the plot next door who was retiring, we bolted it down to a paving slab base, replaced some of the glass to get it back to original layout. I put extra clips on the corners and on any glass that had any movement, then used clear silicon on all 4 corner struts and both apexes. Touch wood up to now I have only had to replace 2 panes, 1 broke by the neighbour putting guttering on his shed and 1 due to frost. Found out the history of the greenhouse its 40+ years old arrived on site second hand and has been on 3 different plots. As a side note try face ache market place you can usually pick glass up for 2 to £3 a pane max. Mind you the last storm was bad here but nothing compared to what you got. Hope this helps. gmm243 Posted Saturday at 19:00 Author Report Share Posted Saturday at 19:00 Thank you all for the advice. Last year the storm really destroyed my greenhouse. Literally knocked it for 6 and broke all the glass and bent most of the frame. Some so badly it was unusable but I am a stubborn sort of a guy so myself and a friend decided to try and fix it. Long story short we fixed it all but we thought it was the corner support struts that let us down so I got 8 cut to length out of angle iron and placed those I'm. This last storm broke a good few of the panes, first one was by a branch then wind got in and popped the rest out. The storm was very bad but not all panes were broken and the frames never moved. I have a Home Base about 30 miles away, I am there twice a week for work so will call in next time I am passing. It is one of the ones that is closing but I never thought of it.
