Tuning Boxes ( re-map)

What's you opinion on the above? Do they work and are they any good? There's an option of going to have it done by a re-map specialist or buy the box and fit it yourself. I would imagine that either option would affect your insurance if you don't notify them, and would invalidate any claim made if they are not notified.

It will affect your insurance! Too long a story but it will.

The boxes are more generic. Personally I`d prefer it live mapped on the road, or a rolling road. Doubt insurance company would know if you didn`t tell them about a remap

That's what I was thinking. This was a discussion we had in work the other night.

Tried both over the years. A re-map is the better option I think. Boxes tend not to be so good, gaps in the power delivery etc.

I had a tuning box on my old PD 1.9 Passat. 
did it make a difference? I don’t know. 
 

it did seem to pull better without judder from standing when towing. 
 

you could adjust the ‘map’ for a multitude of different requirements - low down torque and the such. 
 

TDI tuning was the name and to be fair I had 3 from them over the years and 1 very early model returned for setup to a different car as it needed new connectors.

The best I ever had was a re-map on a BMW 330D. Lifted it to just over 300bhp and loads more torque which made it a pleasure to drive. Plus the mpg increased too!

You can risk not telling the insurance company and keep your fingers crossed that you never knock anyone down. In that event, you might well hear the company applauding your foresight, whilst they rapidly disown you and any claim.
