ShaggyRS6
Its funny you should mentioned this. My springer is the same. He makes a right old girly racket when he gets excited, and when its dinner time, good god you need ear plugs. I have spoken to a few other ESS owners and their's do the same. Annoying mind you. lurcherboy
React to it and your damned forever, ignore it and your ********. Try and distract the dog with something and praise him, easilly said but a lot harder to do. I'm sure NTTF will have good advice for you mate, PM him he ain't half as bad as everyone says he is LB
FBF
i wiould think its the age old problem, the dog whines you let him off the peg and bang the dog has learnt to associate whining with getting what it wants. id probably take the dog out simulate the time it whines and just wait until the dog stops then let it off. then do it again and you sahould notice the dog soon learning that its when its quiet that he can work not the other way round. id think a smart dog would pick this up within a day or two, nothing more annoying to a gun than someone elses dog screaming all the time
nav54
I have tried to distract him but it can be quite hard when all so trying to concentrate on the shooting. He hardly barks and does not make a sound when he is working in a line just when he is on lead and raring to go.

Cranfield
When I was on the edge of the Springer trialling scene back in the 70's (my bitch made FTCH - handled by her trainer), there was a strong opinion that the squeaking (which can get you eliminated from a Field Trial) was genetic. There were claims it was traced back to a champion dog called Hales Smut . All dogs that had Hales Smut in their pedigree were said to suffer this problem. It is repressed excitement and I have always thought it impossible to control. A springer that barks and yaps when hunting, is a different matter. al4x
yep springers are notorious for it and I've seen plenty that the owners wanted as peg dogs that were unable to be taken on peg as it drove the owner up the wall. Its excitement and wanting to work so short of trying to keep the dog occupied while you're shooting there isn't a lot you can do. You can try giving the dog plenty of exercise before going out which sometimes takes the edge off the enthusiasm but ultimately unfortunately if you want a well behaved peg dog you can't beat a lab. nav54
yeah I know mate do more walking and working with him than standing just find it bizarre that he is ok in a pigeon hide even if he see a shot bird land land and lay there he will watch it and not make a sound like you say for standing at peg work you cant beat labs. al4x
I guess he may be used to putting up pheasants and there is always something a lot more exciting about a driven day with a lot more people and dogs about. On peg they can see and hear everything but can't get involved. I'd love to say it gets better with age but by the time they tend to stop they're too old to do much picking up
