Mungler
I got this email today. It's slightly different from the usual boycott emails. Read away but the summary is that if everyone stopped buying Esso and BP petrol then they would be forced to reduce their prices to recapture market share. Mind you, it wouldn't work because as soon as they cut petrol by 1p (or .5p under whatever Asda are knocking it out for) then everyone would go swarming back there and hey presto back where you started. We are hitting £106.9 a litre in some areas now, soon we will be faced with paying £1.10 a ltr. Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT,whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join in! Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the market place not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea: For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... .. THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all You have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! Acting together we can make a difference . If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso

Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Asda,Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso Unfortunatley it will STILL be Opec etc who supply even the chains like Tesco and Sainsbury's (I never saw a Derek behind the filling stations!) Tesco Sainsury's Asda and the other supermarkets will still be buying from companies who produce petrol from oil BOUGHT from Opec etc so really it's not going to make a blind bit of difference. The ONLY way to hit them hard is for everyone to buy a pushbike and leave the cars at home for a month or so. Trouble is we have become too lazy and complacent as a Nation and unless we opt to vote with our money (use a Bike or WALK for a month) and for this we need EVERYONE to do it then it simply will not work Personally I walk the boy to school every morning rain or shine a 1.5 mile walk there and again 1.5 back (cause I use the same route see ) Thats 6 miles a day saved in fuel granted may not be a lot but it's doing MY part Add to this I tend to do all my shopping locally and carry the major part home rather than even use public transport. IF everyone were to stop using public transport AND petrol not only would it give the OIL companies something to consider but also the GOVENMENT as they will be losing revenue from both Petrol AND P.T Edited January 24, 2008 by Lord Geordie
starlight32
Trouble is I can't join in- I have been an employee of both BP and Shell and have my pension to consider.
starlight32
Forget about these ideas of a fuel boycott chaps-We simply won't win, and at the end of the day it is'nt the oil companies its the goverment to blame. Go for alternative fuels-LPG, Biofuel- I know the start up costs are expensive and there is always the chance of the goverment pouncing on it and increasing the price but as I have said in the UK- 'Make hay while the sun shines' When the goverment catches on it will be back to the future and we will be running on Orange peel anyway. Big_Sam
But fuel already is £1.10 a litre? This bloke is out of date.

mossy835
there is no way we can win, they will get it another way.
Lucent
My 2 pennies worth, The problem is not BP & Esso setting the price of petrol, it is a case of basic supply and demand of crude oil. The oil producing nations have restricted oil supply which has pushed prices up. Crude oil which is widely publicised to have exceeded $100 per barrel is meaning that prices at the pumps have to rise. With the government taxing petrol so heavily, us not buying for a week or two would not make a speck of difference and the only people we would inconvenience is ourselves! Pushkin
You sure this isn't just another one of those sentimental B/S stories like the one in "two choices" Pushkin
sidibear
Its the 200% vat on fuel that makes it expensive. Even if the oil companies cut the price the government would still charge the tax.
fullbore
This is exactly what they did in Norway, and it wasn't for a year It only took a couple of weeks before the oil companies caved. Yes, the majority of the price in the UK is tax, but you're not trying to tell me the oil companies aren't making a few quid as well
