deadeye ive
For all those out there that think shooting is cruel then look at this poor fella ..............Only a few minutes old and the magpies have pecked out his rear end and virtually left him blind . Got a phone call this morning and put the .223 into action late this afternoon but to no avail and the bloody thing's have a sixth sense because when I set up a bait point they all perched on surrounding high wire's watching .Counted over 30 over a area spanning no more than 20 acre's . Time for a larsen trap to be put into action I feel .

kip270
Think you will find that LAMPING BIRDS IS ILLEGAL You may only lamp Feral pigeon: (iv) in relation to the killing or taking of Feral Pigeon (Columba livia) only: (a) the use of any device for illuminating a target or any sighting device for night shooting, by authorised persons acting under subparagraph (2)(i) above; It's all here: http://www.naturalengland.org.uk/conservat...L%20Gen-L05.pdf Edited February 4, 2008 by kip270
deadeye ive
I have just read the section Kip and i'm reading it's ok . understanding this sort of documentation was never my strong point ............AH!..Read it again and you are correct Feral pigeon Only Something drastic has to be done because of the numbers concentrated in such a small area so the criteria stipulated in the license applies here i think .......Live stock is being killed not just damaged so something that'll have immediate effect needs to be carried out . Rest assured I won't be doing anything that's illegal and has the example given here previously states just before dawn
mad al
Good thread. These horrible birds are the main reason for me swapping from shotties to air rifles about fifteen years back. Guns and hunting have always been in my family and there has always been some sort of firearm on hand to do thew necessary. Anyway along with a few other animals we used to have a goat or two and it was the sight of magpies on the head of one of the goats trying to get at her eyes that started the ball rolling and after quite a few close shaves with me scaring the vermin then letting rip with a 12g, totally forgetting about the said goat who never used to bat an eyelid at my sorties , but then I saw just how close the "spread" had been to the goat . Off I went and bought one of the very first Rapids...............sorted , apart from the dogs, the only livestock we have now is a horse and her best pal is a Buzzard who thinks it is part of our family here and as for Maggies, yeh they're still around but NEVER fly over our yard . Most of our neighbours have sheep though so I still take great delight in checking their flocks for the little horrors twice a day Edited February 4, 2008 by mad al
al4x
get trapping is the only really effective control for magpies if you need it done quick, get hold of some larsons and a call bird and you will get them sorted pretty quick. Shooting is difficult as they are such crafty *******, you'll get a few then they will get very shy of you
