Weekend Woodies

I gatecrashed the Peltmans hide on Saturday, we had 2 rotarys either side of a dozen dead birds & the pigeon were into the deeks almost immediatley I wasn't expecting much as the day was beautiful not a cloud in the sky, very little wind & glorious sunshine so I only took along 3 boxes of carts.

We were taking it in turns to shoot & it wasn't long before there was a healthy amount of birds in the kill zone we had a quick tidy up in a lull but the birds were still coming thick & fast.

Pelty's come along nicely with the shotty & he took a few right & lefts & one cracking high bird over the hide :good: I had my fair share of trio's & 4 birds for 3 shots :(

I got a bit of video footage ( or at least I thought I did) of pelty taking a nice double, but I'd forgot to press record :good: Pelty then got me on video missing the easiest bird of the day ???

We were banging away at em all afternoon & it wasn't long before I was out of carts ??? not having the clicker with me, we had no idea of how many birds we'd shot so we were both pleased after picking up we had accounted for 84 woodies & 2 ferals  Not bad considering the conditions & all in about 3 & a half hours ???

Twas a great couple of hours, thanks for the help SS, lucky realy that your mate phoned you telling you to go back home as the Gunners were not playing on Saturday but Monday  If i was him i would have let you get to the Ground looking like a right charley

I think i will give getting a dog a miss, no need if you are coming along. I sent SS out a number of times to fetch a few birds that were trying to slip away on foot, with him running a good 2 hundred yards from time to time ??? , much cheaper than a dog.

I had been watching this rape field for a few weeks and had noticed that a good 1000 birds liked to use it in wet windy conditions or as the place to feed in the afternoons.

With me tide up Baby sitting in the morning i wanted to get out there midday and give them a bash.

The count would have been much lower had SS not turned up with his shooting skills and most of all the second magnet.

It realy did seem to make all the dif with the extra movement in the pattern. I put this down to the fact that the pigeon are used to bigger amounts of birds this time of year on the move, anyway they were drawn in from far a field from ones and twos to groups/flocks of a 100.

If we'd been shooting better i think we could of got well over the ton mark but always another day.

Hi Teal

The hide was set up 50 feet away from the road side so within the law. There is a pit lowering you about two feet down and we had a roof halfway across our heads. birds were going round and coming in right to left. most birds dropped in the kill zone. I think we had 4 fly on and land in the trees/bushes along the road side. As you my know the birds tend to look for a Tree to sit in or Hedge if they cant gain height.

There was a story in the local rag about a phesant smashing a car window which was from SS's shoot but i think that its just an anti trying to make things look bad and get her car fixed at the same time :good: .
