Hunter
Its known as Dermatitis, and is caused by severly dry skin/chemical damaged sking. Mechanis who do not use barrier cream and gloves get it from engine oil/break oil etc. Likewise farmers will get it from hard use of the hands or connection with chemicals such as motor oils etc. (or both). I do not know what the cures are, but it can be prevented using latex gloves and barrier cream. A good hand moisteriser would be a good start, and a visit to your local GP for him/her to check it over and give you advice/treatment. JohnGalway
Being a farmer, and soon to be working with concrete - a lot, oh joy - I used to get that, I do sympathise as it's very sore indeed. Neutrogena helped relieve it for me, not cure it though. First port of call I'd reccomend to you is your local chemist. They usually give good free advice and have the cure there! J@mes
I use an Aloe Vera cream from here: http://www.foreverliving.com/webapp/wcs/st...&langId=-12 its pretty expensive at £10 a tube, but its the only one i have found that really stopped my hands from drying out when working outside in all conditions. auto culto
i suffer the same thing being a mechanic. I find the best cure for me is aqueous cream lathered on than put some latex gloves on over the top . It seams to make your hands usable again in very short time. Just make sure you continue with the cream even when there ok . The cream is cheaper over the counter than on prescription

russuk
All very good suggestions, you could also try shea butter. Or this badboy... It's called bag balm and is American, I found this when over in america skiing, the lift attendants swear by it. Whatever cream you choose, cake it all over and put sandwhich bags over your hands or such like, then go to bed. Also, get some evening primrose oil tablets/capsules

Baldrick
Benelli, coming from farming myself, I have had the cracked skin drama too. Not comfortable. I used Sudocrem (usually used for babies' bottoms...) and/or Neutrogena. If it helps, I did see an advert about a beeswax-based cream that was guaranteed to resolve cracked skin on your mitts, or you get your money back. lurcherboy
I used to suffer from cracked hands in the winter. No creams available-at the time-worked. When the latex gloves hit the market the problem was solved unless you were allergic to starch/corn powder or whatever dusting agent they were using. That kicked off a whole new problem and lots of us suffered rashes. I now wear un-powdered latex and use no barrier or after use creams. If you get really desparate dunk your hands in parrafin, it may seem a bit harsh, but it works. LB

paulf
If I get a flair up of dermatites then I use aqueuse cream, rub it on my hands just before I go to bed. You need to strt wearing gloves to work in though, if you dont your hands will become even more sensatized. I wear gloves for work all year around and only get a problem if my hands get wet or I forget my gloves.

Cream E45 is good, maybe germolene?
