Si-Bore
As title. Are the flocked coated anymore effective in your experience? Cheers Si
Jim Sarakun
Any more effective than what? Dead birds is tops, so not more effective than they.
Si-Bore
My mistake - are they anymore effective than standard plastic decoys? Si
Jim Sarakun
Best deeks I find, are them sillosocks, as the birds don't seem to turn away so often with them. Some one will recommend something else I am sure, though I still say dead birds in a cradle is tops. Get half a dozen of each and see how you get on. Hang on though, last time I looked them flocks were silly money. Go for the silly's as they don't shine in the wet, and don't chip in your bag either. Cranfield
The difficult thing is that you never really know whether flocked are better than non flocked. I have had birds come steadily into plastic decoys and flocked decoys, in various situations and weather conditions. Sometimes the birds don't come in to either. Its impossible to do a scientific test, so go with what you are confidant with (or can afford). I would also suggest buy shells rather than full bodies (that will save a few £'s), as the shells move better IMO.
henry d
I paint my deeks with matt humbrol paint, they are as good at pulling in the birds as they were when I first painted them 15 or so years ago.
tobysleeper
You could try doin your old deeks with a flocking kit.Got a couple myself and did the tops of my full bodied and a dozen shells well impressed.most of my full bods are nearly 20 yrs old and now look like new. Cranfield
Traztaz, if you do a Google image search for "flocked pigeon decoys" and "plastic pigeon decoys" , you will see some examples, but the difference is not obvious in some of the pictures. lurcherboy
I could have used grey guttering last Saturday cut down to 10" lengths with a bit of tippex on. If they are having it any deek will do. LB
charlie 1
I now only ever use dead birds as you can't beat them and you can change any for free that are mankey ect. but a few years ago when i started shooting i had some ordinary plastic deeks and was told that by covering the deek in something like glue and then lightly sprinkle with sawdust then paint the deek over the top therfore basically flocking the deek, would improve the amount of pigeon i shot. well i did and i didn't really notice too much difference tbh as long as it has a white patch on the neck and also i like to paint the sidestrip white as the wing markings, i think any deek is a good deek. give it ago and try different things. the best way to learn is by experimenting. then stay with whatever you feel confident with. good luck charlie
Highlander
It's the old story...if woody wants to be where you are then any decoy will work, if not then you're probably in the wrong place! You get a day where the birds are coming in thick and fast and there's dead birds all over plus feathers blowin' about and still woody dives on in it won't matter a damn what deeks you've got other times you can lay out a world championship pattern and you won't see 'em for dust. You are quite right H but on the other 360 days much brain effort and hard graft is needed to get them to decoy and new flok coated deeks are money well spent, failing sufficient funds a good grey and white matt paint finish on your old shiney ones will suffice. Dead birds are fine but through the winter months especially on rape alot of deeks are required about 40ish and who really wants to lug 40 dead birds about - if it rains on them then they just look absolutely yuk - so good finished plastic every time!
