Dr W
A speed limit of 70mph set in 1965 was suitable for the vehicles of the day but nowadays with improved safety etc the motorway limit should be at least 80mph, everyone drives at that speed anyway so what's the difference. Cranfield
A speed limit of 70mph set in 1965 was suitable for the vehicles of the day but nowadays with improved safety etc the motorway limit should be at least 80mph, everyone drives at that speed anyway so what's the difference. I use to think that this was a good idea, but when you consider the increased amount of vehicles on the road in 2008 as opposed to 1965, it doesn't seem such a good idea after all. I believe that speed limits are far more relevant from a safety aspect in the lower speed zones and on country lanes (where there is often no posted limits), I obey the 30 mph and 40 mph speed limits as rigorously as I can, but admit to relaxing by 5-10 mph on the 50 and 60 mph limits. On motorways I drive according to traffic conditions and whether I can see any police, rather than the 70 mph limit, but I no longer drive over 90 mph. al4x
As cranfield says roads are very congested these days so really the limit is fine. After all the motorway limit also applies to 4x4's and transit vans and a load of ropey older cars. If you raise the limit you also raise the limit at which prosecutions take place. At the moment you're very unlucky to be done under 80 and its pretty rare to be done under 90. Means testing is good in principle in that its meant to sting a bit so if you're loaded £60 isn't going to be much of an issue whereas £500 or more will seem like a slight deterant. And to all that claim its just a stealth tax if you don't like it don't do it, then you won't get supposedly stealth taxed. I actually like cameras they have made speeding far easier and it does concern me how you can be paying enough attention to the road if you don't spot this large fluorescent yellow box at the side of the road. If you can't spot that then odds are you won't see a child or animal about to run out and its just possible the faster you are going the less likely you are to be able to spot these hazards
berettaman1
Guilty as charged, but hang on a minute .......................... when is there going to be a minimum speed in this country ( and I'd like to have that enforced as harshly as the existing ones ) !!!!  Hey hang about Sundowner, You are only saying that cos you aint got a car, or a licence!!Its OK for you getting about on a skateboard!!But how about us old pensioners then? Wait till you are old enough to have a motor then ask for slower speed limits!!

Devon Fox
How the hell is firing a rifle into the unknown the same as doing 35mph in a 30 limit? contender for most ridiculous statement of the week Why is a 30 limit a 30 limit? Just to annoy you? you tell me?, its taking a gamble, whether you agree with a speed limit is by the by, when you blast around a bend in the road how do you know what is the other side?, do you alter your speed or do you rely on reactionary driving?, i was trying to make a point that you would not gamble with a gun, where do you think most casulties happen?, on the road i wouldnt mind betting, no one ever heads out to have/cause injury to others i hope! Dirty Harry
Why is a 30 limit a 30 limit? Because the local authorites and town planners who know more about this than you or I decide thats what the speed limit should be. when you blast around a bend in the road how do you know what is the other side? Because you should always make sure you can shop in the distance that you can see to be clear. Harry

J@mes
Speed guns work at over 1000 yards so they may have got you while you were slowing down. MY detector picks them up at up to 4000m, however, im 99% certain they didnt get me when i was slowing down as they were round a bend under a bridge, the advantage of the detector i have is that it can pick up lasers even if they arent pointing at you....saved me at least 5-6 tickets. Can you tell us what detector you have? Fleabag
Any body seen the signs on the motorway that say keep two chevrons from the car in front. what if that car is speeding, and in your defense you highlight the the must obey signage. wonder how that would stand up.
