Topgunners & Lurcher Boy

Recommended Posts

We arranged to meet up this morning at 05.00am at a spot just outside Coventry.

LB was going to leave about 02.00am (mad keen or wot?) and I set my alarm for 04.00am and got up to see it was drizzling.

After ringing my hoppo Alan to make sure he was up I got the flask ready etc and my mobile rings about 04.15am. LB is on the other end to inform me he was ALREADY THERE at the meeting point.

I promptly replies " did you not get the message I left you last night to say it was all cancelled, due to the rain?"

He mutters something like "you must be *^(**&(*&*& Joking . I just driven 180 miles -3 *****Y hours or so, and now you tell me it's off?".

I let him off the hook eventually and says we will be there about 05.00am as planned.

When we arrive at the layby and approach his truck we can hear an almighty Roaring like the elusive Norfolk Big Cat.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ . Zonked out and spooking every living early morning animal, bird dog walker, milkman etc etc for 10 miles.

PICS to follow

After a short journey we arrive at the destination and myself and LB treks across the muddy fields to the high seat.

Up goes LB into the chair whilst I sets up the hide with the camcorder on a tripod just in front of the hedgerow of the wood. We sat there for 2 hours but unfortunately no Deer show and we walk back to the truck.

Off down to the Cafe for 3 x Full Brekkies (dutifully paid for by LB). Who said he was a tite wad?

PICS to follow

We then drops onto a farm to Zero in LB'S Rifle which he had knocked and after about 3000 (or so it seemed) shots at the target we finally gets it shooting in the middle of the card.

After this we then travel all over Warwickshire and Gloucestershire looking for the pigeons to no avail and then return locally and set up on some drilling where we had seen a few flitting about earlier on in the morning.

After an hour and a half we had only shot 3 and packed up.

We then sets off to do some "Bunny Bashing".

Alan driving, LB shooting and me filming.

Wellllll, after the first 6 shots and misses myself and Alan are thinking HUH. Wot's occuring here?

PICS & VIDEOS to follow

They all seemed to be landing slightly high of the target and after a few grumbles and moans about his lad playing football with the scope, new gun, haven't shot live quarry with it before, all of a sudden LB starts to hit them with consistency?.

think the booze is wearing off by now.

:good:

.17HMR?

Good range on the kill.

Flat trajectory.

BUT, what a mess of the meat....... NO dinner's here.!!!

An hour or so later we have 18 in the bag and then shoots across to a horse riding Farm where we shot 69 the other afternoon.

LB then tries our CZ .22 Rimmy. MEGA surprised that he couldn't hear a thing as it went off and quite impressed with its killing power and range.

He shoots another 5 and then I swap seats with him and pop off a quick 15 or so and then we spot a baby bunny about 90 yards out which I drop only for LB to say there's another baby one about 50 yards further out..

" Go on then " they both chorus and i takes careful aim as I could only see it's head and drop it stone dead. Straight through the eyeball at 137 yards paced.

GET IN THERE. LB.

:good:

I shoots another six and then we are on 25 a piece and a GENT as I am ; I let Lurcher Boy have the last one to make it 51.

Top day in the end . 51 rabbits and a Bucket Load of Banter.

We say our farewells and leave LB to drive off into the sunset with eyes like "slits in the snow"

He looked knackered.

:good:

I got up at stupid o'clock and found myself in Coventry 3 hours later :good: I have no idea how that happened or the fact that I got there early so I had to share my wonder with Dave. I belled him just after 4 and he then tells me the day is off! I had no option but to let rip for a few minutes with some choice words only to here him laughing his nuts off and telling me to grab some shuteye until 5 when he and Alan will meet me.

I was woken at 5 by Alan sounding the horn and some 6'6" paparazzi shoving a camera in my face, more verbal was delivered, then we moved off to a high seat. Unfortunately the previous snoring session seemed to have alerted the local muntie population but I did get to see a Hare that was completely oblivious to our presence move into the woods as the day started.

Then we made our way to a cafe for breakfast which was good and filled the plate but it seemed a bit expensive. I was checking the price list when I realised I had paid for 3 brekkies.

Zeroing was a laugh and being on the HMR bloody expensive but I got there in the end although my butchers block now has a few pieces missing from its outer edges.

Then we moved off to find the woodies. Anyone who is struggling should take a leaf out of the Topgunners books. Keep driving around looking for them. We split up with Alan going off on his own as me and Dave went another way. Found a few spots that had some woodies on but not enough commitment from them to unload and set up. We went back to one of the spots we tried earlier and decided it was as good as any of the others so set up under an oak tree with about 30 deeks laid out. The birds were moving but not near enough to us. They seemed to prefer the high ground well out in the open. Despite that I managed to frighten one and Dave downed two. It was drizzling quite heavily by now and had I been out on my own I would probably have chucked the towel in and done the offski. Luckily for me though Dave started telling me some of his holiday tales. This is a bloke who could start a fight on his own in a locked room. I was getting sore ribs from laughing and when Alan got back from his search for elusive woodie I was grateful. We jacked the decoying then in the pursuit of bunnies.

Full of confidence after zeroing I took up position riding shotgun and Alan got me within easy shooting distance of the bunnies only for me to miss every one of them for quite a while. When they both stopped crying with laughter we had a check for zero again which was still in so take two. Now I was hitting them and I knew what I had been doing wrong. Supporting the rifle on flesh rather than the door frame or wing mirror was the answer.

It's a smashing rifle but I need more range time to get the best out of it. I took all shots at the body as I knew I wasn't skilled enough to take head shots Like Dave who demonstrated how to do it later.

BTW that long distance baby that Alan and me encouraged him to shoot was unbelievable. We only pointed it out to him so we could see him miss!

It was getting late now and I promised the rottie I would take her for a walk so We said our farewells, took a few pics, and they then gave me detailed directions on how to get home but in the completely wrong direction. I ended up in Monmouth which looks like a nice place but was closed when I got there.

Topgunners, thanks for a excellent day out that will be remembered for a long while not only for the shooting but the mickey taking and general good banter.
