dunganick
lovely round, but not quite as versatile as the .222 or .223 But moderates well, pretty accurate, and you can use light rifles without suffering any sort of recoil. Dead-Eyed Duck
If I saw a fox at 200 yards I know which calibre I'd rather have Don

garyb
It's fine for fox But as the others have said, why not consider something like a 223? The ammo is readily available everywhere and cheap... I'm not sure the same can be said for the 22 hornet ?
markbivvy
If I saw a fox at 200 yards I know which calibre I'd rather have Don Nothing i would like more than to take the 223 out all of the time. but west yorkshire police in there wisdom say i cant shoot rabbits with it. A 200 yds fox don, can you see that far now mate.
rec-baller
Got my .22 Hornet for foxing, absplutely no probs with Lancs police ( thanks to George Stokes -my F,E,O ) mate of mine has done some 35 and 40 grains homeloads for me, absolutely ****in amazingly accurat at 150 yards, i can clover leaf 3 rounds together !! also Target sports of bolton do 50 rounds of PPU 35 grains for about £15 so ammo,s not overly expensive !! shaun

A 200 yds fox don, can you see that far now mate. Ah, I knew that there had to be a sensible reason Mark. I did use a mates hornet many years ago, and an accurate round it was too. But, I seem to recall that after 150 yards or so the bullet drop became somewhat pronounced, plus of course the ft lbs did too. At the end of the day we all use what we can, although why anyone would use a 243 specifically for foxes beats me (down in the trenches I go) Don

foxshooter243
I lamped foxes for about ten years using a 22 hornet full stock by anschutz, my findings were that up to 150 yds it was dropping them in their tracks, but after that distance the probability of wounding was higher and this was not due to bad bullet placement, it didnt have enough oomph for the 200 yards and over shots ...223 is a much better round. bongodriver
My FAC states that I can use 22 hornet on fox, I even heard from my FLO that .17HMR is ok on fox but chest shots only, he said there have been instances of fox taking head shots with HMR and still running. markbivvy
Hodgsons H110, at 12.2 grns produces 3100 fps with a 40 grn blitzking.(Alfa crono) some one on here will know what foot pounds this produces, i dont. last evening while waiting for Charlie i head shot 3 rabbits closest was 116 yds longest was 173 yds (leica 1200 RF).with less than an inch hold over.above its eyeball. of the wing mirror of me truck. longest shot fox i have ranged is 186 yds, had 2 that evening both in the same place. the scope is 2 inch above the bore on a CZ 527 lux . yes the 223 is faster and flatter, but the hornet is not bad. the above load is safe in my rifle, no pressure signs at all. this might not be the same in any one Else's.
