ALWAYS USE A WIRE TRACE

If you know pike are about even if you are fishing for perch you have to use a wire trace.

You could always try a dead bait of some kind, smelt, mackerel, herring. You could try a wobble bait sometimes better than a spinner or lure of some kind. If you have a dead bait on a float rig you can sort of trot it down the river to where you think the pike are hiding. You do have quite a few options.

Jammy you will need a wire trace, doesn't have to be multi strand or very long but those teeth are sharp!

Spinning is fun so stick with it, (decathalon have some rubber jigs that are great) go for obvious features, around boats etc etc and keep on the move, don't flog a piece of water to death. They are either there and up for it or they are not. Also I only use single hooks, haven't lost one yet and it makes unhooking so easy compared to trebles. Personal preference but worth a thought.

Stay fairly small on lures too and then you have good chance of a Perch (I had a 3lb one from Shepperton last year). You should take a mat for unhooking and you don't need jaw wedges or whatever the heck those things are called just get a good hold through the gills and they calm right down and open their mouths for you!

Have fun

Hi Mate,

This is a particular area of expertise for me, living near the Somerset Levels!

I agree with the others - a wire trace is a must.

Spinning with plugs is the most fun and effective way to catch large numbers of pike of all sizes. Don't listen to people who tell you it only catches jacks. That's just tosh, I've had plenty of trips that resulted in double figure fish to plugs, the best being 24lb. The difference is you catch MORE fish, so some of them are smaller by the law of averages. I always find it funny that the chap I fish with regularly still deadbaits all the time, even though he usually averages 1-2 fish per trip, when I've banked 10 or more in a day!

In my experience the big 'S' plug is just about the most deadly lure for pike available. Nothing in fishing can beat the shock of a large pike flying our of the water with your lure in it's mouth, spraying you with water and scaring the bejesus out of you!

It's also incredibly easy to fish a plug effectively and it doesn't snag on the bottom as much as a spinner. Just use a varying speed of retrieve with a few jerks thrown in to simulate a sick fish.

Bigger lure is best for pike - you'll also find that perch are greedy little beggars and I've had them from 1/2 a pound upwards on largish pike lures.

One thing I really would suggest (unless you're planning on eating them) is to debarb your hooks, or swap them with smaller barbless hooks. These huge thick wire hooks that you see on lures these days are totally unnecessary and just cause horrendous damage to the fish. They also make unhooking a nightmare with multiple hooks as the pike often ends up with it's mouth literally 'sewn' together with all the hooks.

You'll find that pike have particular times of day that they are most active, which change throughout the year. After a while of fishing a particular water you'll know when these are and waste less time flogging them when they're napping. Generally early morning and late evening are good times to start though.

Keep moving - pike are very aggressive when they're hungry and if your lure passes near a hunting fish it will grab it straight away. Don't bother flogging the same patch for hours.

Good luck!

nah honestly mate good catch what size was that baby??

it's hard really to decide on plugs, spinners, dead baits and all the different methods

if you listened to everyone you would be or could be out a fortune just go with what you can afford and

you will do all right i have seen days that i have just used an auld silver spoon and caught all day and maybe the next

day i have used pro-logic gear at 10 - 15 quid each and got the same sort of return

As previously stated allways use a wire trace! In my opinion pike fishing is down to preference. Every thing that has been said on this thread is true you just need to use the method that you enjoy the most. I am going to break out the pike gear ready for the cold snap at the weekend and i'll by using plugs, lures and spinners to see what they take on the day. If pike are there and feeding though i find they will hit anything you drag past them within reason. As has been said before, stay mobile. Good luck and tight lines.

We were using dead bait last week and managed a 3.5lb pike. Bloody thing was wild at being caught but the adrenalin rush when landing it on the banking and it calming down to be unhooked was high.

I've not tried that s plug so may buy one and see how well that does.

Steve's second cast out, the rod took a hit, he hit the rod and started to reel in what was on, Pike jumped about a bit and cleared the water before diving back in....Rod still bent and line taught....rod sprung back for a moment and then bent again..when he landed it the pike had got off the hook and he had a 4lb lump of weed instead. :)

All of the reply’s are sound advise.

Fishing with lures. You need to make the lure come to life, fool the pike into thinking it’s a real wounded fish. Not easy to do. I have seen many people cast the lure out and reel it in, cast it out real it in. Guess what, no strike.

Put life into the lure by jerking it, let it sink. Pull it one side then the other. Lift the rod tip to bring the lure up. Put the rod tip in the water to make it dive. Reel in slow, then fast.

It’s a real skill that you will master in time. Most important is to know what lure or spinner does what. And last of all spinners and lures are also designed to catch anglers as well, as my huge collection shows, most of which I have never caught a fish with and others I have caught many fish with.

Yeh Buskfast, thats soo true.. Unhooking mats are a real must for pike fishing, unless you are able to handle the fish well enough to unhook it without putting it down. I've found that the most effective method for pike to be deadbaiting, but using course fish as deadbaits rather than seafish. Roach really have been superb for me on the river using a double treble set-up which I make myself.. If anyone wants to now how to then I'm sure I can put some instructions up somewhere somehow.

Tight lines.
