Topgunners
I have just recently acquired some new land where I went for a recce on Saturday and she has a herd of about 70 Deer of which she has granted permission to cull; when required. Must get my .243 now. Dave K

Holland&Holland
Congratulations on the new permission. Nice to see white deer. I culled fallow deer in a game park before, and it is not that easy. If you want just one it is ok, but they learn quickly and it is difficult to get a headshot at 200 meters with all the deer flocking together. That is the distance they normally let you walk or drive up to them before they run...
tulkyuk
That is the one thing good thing about being able to shoot from a stationary vehicle - the deer are used to it and will normally let you get a couple of shots off before they bunch together. Dunkield
...and you save ammo by lining them up and getting 3 or 4 at a time [joke]
Topgunners
You jammy jammy ******* - although culling park deer aint much fun as they are easy to shoot It is not a deer park. It's a private estate/farm and the farmer bought these for his missus to admire. But he says there are now too many and they are taking over his crop fields. The reason they were so close to the road was there are two pools next to the wood, where they go for a drink. and there are 6 white ones in total. gdunc
I'd love a big fallow heed for my wall there aren't any up this neck of the woods. I echo the previous posts - an excellent opportunity for proper deer management
andovian
ill swap you a day there for a days fishing on my goldfish pond no no on a more serious note it will be really challenging to be able to walk up to the semi tame deer and do some "proper" deer management this to me is farming not shooting

I do stalk on the hill but I also stalk on farms where the farmer sees deer as a pest eating his crops so I manage the numbers to reduce this damage - that is what deer management is about and I feel that if you are willing to do one you should be willing to do the other. It may not always be an exciting stalk through woodland or on the hill but it is just as worthwhile in the grand scheme of things.

Must get my .243 now. Dave K You may want to go a bit bigger than .243 for Fallow, not saying it won't do the job, but something with a bit more may be a better choice, especially for the bigger bucks. A great opportunity for some good Deer management too, try to count how many doe's there are, but from one of the pics there seems to be a few prickets that need to taken out. The park i used to work on had an anuual cull of 50 prickets and 50 does, to keep the herd in good condition. The next thing to think of is a larder, and chiller for the amount of Deer that would be culled.

GJUK
Once you've killed 70 of these, what are you doing with them? It seems a shocking waste imho to just 'dispose' of them.

GJUK
errrrm...eat them? I was not trying to be sarcastic, I mean really 70 dear. Could you eat 70 dear, let alone store 70 dear at your home? I don't object to eating what you shoot, I do object to the 'items' going to waste however. Just my opinion Glad to hear they're being eaten though. Enjoy your shoot and take lots of photos pal. Jon

Jon There is a herd of 70 Deer, and culling them dosen't mean shooting them all !! It's all about keeping the numbers to a certain level to maintain a healthy population, plus some lovely meat for the table.
GJUK
I understand the point behind the shoot, I was (as a new starter in this hobby) trying to work out the logistics involved. Kind regards, Jon
