ShaggyRS6
Hi all, Just had a chat with the FLO and he has said he cant see any reason why i cannot now apply for a .223 for Fox and Vermin. My budget is not that big at the moment so I was wondering if you guys can recommend a rifle, scope and moderator. Cheers all

tulkyuk
What are you after Lee - a stop gap untill funds allow or something to keep for a few years mate. Also an idea of the budget would give us a better guideline on what to suggest. Edited November 4, 2008 by tulkyuk
steve_b_wales
A .223 is a fine rifle and ample power to take fox. Why don't you look at getting a 22-250? Extra power and flatter shooting. I used to have a .223 which was great, then went onto 22-250 and haven't looked back.

Extra power and flatter shooting.I used to have a .223 which was great, then went onto 22-250 and haven't looked back. I had a 0.223, changed to a 22-250, changed back to a 0.223 and have never looked back.... If you intend to shoot over 250 yards then a 22-250 may show some advantage, but I would guess that 95% of all foxes shot are under 150 yards. What he said! Also, what are your priorities for the rifle? Light/heavy? Synthetic/wood? Are you going to be using it out of a vehicle or putting in some miles with it slung over your shoulder? etc

Budget is as low as i can without sacrificing too much quality. I dont mind second hand at all. Looking for something to keep for a few years. As an example I paid £500 for the Ruger HMR you can see in my profile, that was second hand with the scope and I would not want to go to much more than that. I wont realistically be shooting over 250 yards very often at all, so a .223 will be perfect. I want it for rabbits as well as foxes as I have a few permissions where you just cant get close enough with an HMR, especially in windy conditions. Dunkield
Have a look at CZ527's Lee, I only paid about £200 secondhand for mine once I had flogged the scope it came with. A bit like cars it is is cheaper to buy one when someone esle has done all the work and is selling up. Edit to add, for a scope you won't go far wrong with an S&B 8x56, and a Wildcat mod. njc110381
I'd suggest a CZ527 too. I have one and it shoots great. The trigger is spot on and it's very accurate. I only wish I'd bought a standard profile barrel model. I have the varmint and it's a little heavy for what I do with it (sub 100 yard rabbit and fox.....SPLAT!!!)
