Billy.
A couple of weeks ago I was out with the .17 and i'd only ever put about 100 shots through it. I took a shot and about half a second later a big flame came out the muzzle, followed by a load of smoke. Clearly it's just some unburnt powder that's collected in the mod and I'm certain it's of no danger to me or the gun. I was just wondering if anyone else has had a similar thing happen? Obviously I should clean the gun a bit more often, but anyone could easily stick 100 through a .17 in a day!

Newsportshooter
I've put quite a few through my .17Hmr and have never seen that either. You sure one of your mates isn't having a laugh? Could oil have got in the mod?? It sounds quite excessive for 'unburt powder' (have you had any funny souding rounds?). Have you taken the mod apart to look for anything obvious that shouldn't be there? By the way 'you looking for any shooting company'?? Harnser
sounds like a slow burn or retarded burn of the powder . This can happen if the powder is marginally damp or if the primer has not ignited properply . I have had this happen with home loaded shot gun shells . If this happens again or if you hear a less than normal bang then you must check to see if the bullet has logded in the barrel . A follow up shot could be dangerous or very expensive . Harnser . casts_by_fly
i've had unburnt powder build up in my sac from subsonic 22's. Never enough to catch fire though. Thanks Rick
TheHunter
I have found a ton of crud and grease in my .17 mod but never unburnt powder. WD40 in mod perhaps? Remember always follow the manufactures instructions and clean the barrel after every outing.
Axe
I've had this happen twice to me now. It scared the heck out of me the first time it happned. It prompted a clean out of the mod, thats for sure. Could never put my finger on why this happened, but the second time it happened was following a routine service of the mod. So a build up of powder it was not. I couldn't fathom it out though as I also ruled out oil etc as the rifle is stored mussle up. Both times it happened, it was cold and with plenty of moisture in the air, not that that would cause it either.
rimfire4969
This happened to me a couple of days ago, i have proberly fired about 250 shots witout cleaning the Sak mod on my CZ 17 hmr, i fired and hit a crow about 60 yards out. Less than second later a hiss and smoke from the mod lasting maybe a second or just under. At this point i stopped shooting went back to my pick up and stripped the action and mod checked the barrel but nothing seemed any different . I fired a couple of test shots and everthing is working fine. But it did scare the **** out of me
