Cold and windy morning

As there were a good few geese in the area I have permission I decided to get out and see if I could get amongst them.

I set up under the silvery shine of the last quarter moon which was high in the sky and partially obscured by fine cloud. I put out 2 sets of deeks in comma shapes with a good open space in the middle, I was in my layout blind with the dog, in the middle of one set of deeks.

As the sun started to break over the horizon the wind got more and more fierce, but made the deeks move well on their stakes, so I was hopeful. I wasn`t aware of the first 2 birds coming in until they were just on the last approach and about to back paddle and land.

I popped up and shot the first bird and swung through it, as it was stone dead, on to the other bird, which was powering away from me in the strong wind and I let it go as I didn`t think it was still in range and therefore I was more likely to wound it and possibly see it fly off.

Anas was happy to retrieve the bird and get some blood pumping again after lying next to me for the past hour or so and I took the chance to walk about and get rid of the cuppa I had at home.

We jumped back into the blind and within 5 minutes a skein of about 30-35 pinks came in a faltering, waving line towards us against the strong wind. I started to call when they were still a long way off as the wind should blow it to them, and I was pleased to see them come in nicely. However this lot weren`t going to make it easy for me and were coming in from my right and slightly behind me. As I`m a right hander and lying down this is the worst shooting position and I decided to let them either drop in or carry on as I didn`t want to fluff the shot.

The geese overshot the deeks and slid slightly to my left but now that made them well behind me, they then circled back to my right just like the first time and overshot again and this time they just powered away from me :hmm:

I had a quick look and saw why, behind me were approximately 1000 geese heading away to who knows where, but not my field, and they were taking the small skein with them.

Twenty minutes later and another skein came the same way as the last and this time they came in but to my far right and too far for a shot, before they too saw a distant big skein and followed them.

Anyway one in the bag and it looked like the main flight was over so I headed home for a good hot cuppa...........happy days!
