12gdaz
Hi all, a stiupid question if you please? My permission has a few power cables running through. Obviousley i'm not going to be shooting towards them but are there any issues with electric arcing with me sat close to them but firing away? There is a cracking flight path but i would like to use the natural cover which is close to the power lines. What do you reckon?
Big_Sam
Unless you happen to have jolly long barrels which actually touch the lines, you will be fine. Look at the length of the insulators. That is the minimum safe distance from those power lines. Usually about 3 feet. I wouldn't recommend sitting under them. My shoot has 11,000V lines running through the middle, never had any problems being near them. Be sensible, be safe.
12gdaz
Ta. 30inch is my lengh. ooer Safe as houses then. Further to my last questin though....... as you fire oviousley there is energy caused. Does this count as electricery? ooh physics was never my strong point. An internal combustion engine works on explosions and this energy can be used to propel vehicles, heat houses, provide lighting and all sorts. Maybe i've stumbled on an alternative energy. 20 shotguns firing constantly to power my house, noisy and expensive but alternative non the less! Harnser
Afriend of mine used to work for the old electricity board and he once told me that the most damage to power cables in the country side was caused by shot gun pellets . Taff Mason
i've shot right underneath them a few times because there is usually a bit of cover around them. the only problems i had was if the birds went around the back of you you have to watch you don't hit the pole when you swing through. Ozzy Fudd
probably shouldnt say this but i regularly blast crows that are sitting on telephone lines (not the same i know, but still...). i was edgy at first but the farmer who'sland they cross told me to shoot away, he was more worried about the crows than anything else! having said that most of the lines are armoured so shotguns dont do as much damage as most people think... I can assure you that they are not shotgun proof, my phone is forever out of order during the shooting season because some **** has hit the phone lines whilst shooting. Imperfection
Unless you happen to have jolly long barrels which actually touch the lines, you will be fine. lol-he could be using a punt gun... But like the others-you're safe! They build houses literally yards away from pylons, substations etc so they've gotta be safe.
POW!
I must agree that more often than not pigeon will follow the lines , or close to . a common flight line petern , in my experience . POW.
wingnut
Hi all, a stiupid question if you please? My permission has a few power cables running through. Obviousley i'm not going to be shooting towards them but are there any issues with electric arcing with me sat close to them but firing away? There is a cracking flight path but i would like to use the natural cover which is close to the power lines. What do you reckon? Depends on what you call close, bear in mind that 75% of all power lines in this country are not insulated, recomended distance from lines depends on the voltage, but most people will recomend a distance of 6Mtrs, electricity can arc if you climb the pole, or raise the body work of a tipping lorry, or a tractor, the injuries that may be recieved from such an occurence do not bear thinking about, you will be safe if you stay on the ground. THEINVISIBLESCARECROW
I've shot under & near the pylons but only in dry weather, you never know.
Billy.
This is going to sound really silly, but I discovered this whilst waiting for a train to work, in a massively hungover state in the rain.... Let me point out you will need an umbrella with a metal pole, not carbon/plastic etc. You know which ones I mean. 1. Take an umbrella (on a wet sort of day) and get it nicely covered in rain. 2. Sit/stand near/under the power lines and lick your finger and wet the end of your nose. 3. Slowly bring your nose towards the umbrella and a yellow/orange coloured spark will begin to arc from the metal to your nose. When I did it, it was almost a ureka! moment, but something you'd only find amusing whilst your brain a swishing and swashing around in your head! I won't be held responsible if it isn't as fun/dangerous as I found it to be, and by the way, I did it near 11000v train lines, with about 10 feet between me and the wires, so I'm not sure what 30 feet and a quarter of a million volts will do. Oh and no, I wouldn't shoot too near them, the last thing you want is the electricity board calling the police saying you're damaging their property! Just find a beter spot!
