GJUK
So, if after using a gun on a day you feel tired/cold/have to pop out for whatever reason (one returning your guns to their safe). How long should you leave a gun 'dirty' before you clean it. I am mostly trying to refer to the barrels, rather than say a wet gun that had been used in the rain. I would assume that a wet gun would require attention ASAP. Thanks Jon Ps, have searched. But it came up with the normal random posts Jon

GJUK
Firstly thank you. I work hard, sometimes. I like looking after my stuff also. I was just trying to get some kind of feed back along the lines of "oh yeh, a day here or there will make no difference" or "you MUST clean your gun ASAP or it will rust within 20 minutes of use". tweedledee
so long as it is`nt wet i suppose a gun would never really need cleaned.my dad has 22rf and 12b and i can say it has never been cleaned in its lifetime. they are in a woeful state though. Andy W
If its wet, strip it and clean it including taking chokes out to clean and lube, I clean the barrel or barrels after every outing and wipe the action down, takes seconds. paul1966
i think you will find that some people do not clean their guns at all, if the barrels can cope with the pressure of the cartridge going off a little bit of dirt is not going to hurt. i use a barrel rod that's basically a big pipe cleaner, give the barrels a quick squirt of cleaning oil and push the rod down the barrel job done. Peter De La Mare
Sometimes I only drag a bore snack through and call it good, if the good is being used again in less than a week. Then a wipe over the barrels with my Legia soaked cloth. It really only needs the bare minimum. The little grease you put on the pins and lugs won't go anywhere, and will last for quite a while. BTW, the wet gun cleaning tip, especially the chokes, was a good one. They'll rust in pretty well by the time you get home and put the gun away. I take a mini cleaning kit with me and clean/dry the parts when I get back to the car.
urikastu
I have a friend that never cleaned his guns. Six of us went shooting end of November. broke up into three pairs. He loaded and imediately blew the barrel about four inches away from his hand. His young son who was his partner for the day while carrying the guns back to the car on the last outing tripped and plugged the barrel, he thought he had got all the dirt out but was afraid to say anything to his father. I think he cleans his guns now If you are to lazy to clean your guns after every outing at least strip'em down and check them over, it could be a lifesaver If you put it off till tomorrow, remember the old saying tomorrow never comes so that gun will stay dirty and could possibly unsafe
garyb
I only clean mine if it has gotten wet, or annually at the start of the game season.

Andy W
Well thank you for telling me how I should clean a wet gun. It wasnt the question I asked, but thanks.I wasnt telling you how you should clean a wet gun, you asked how we clean a gun so I told you how I do it, if it is WET I strip and clean it particularly the chokes as rain will get into the thread or the end of the barrel (well it did on mine once) other than that as I said "I clean the barrel or barrels after every outing and wipe the action down, takes seconds." Ozzy Fudd
if ive been at clays or had a good day hunting and fired alot of cartridges then i give the guns a full strip down and clean. if ive only fired a dozen shots (like today) then ill give the barrel a quick pull through. Fat Dog
I am a wee bit old fashioned on this one. On returning home "Dogs first, gun second and me last". I always clean my gun asap. Has stood me well.
