I do not wish this to sound like a criticism or endorsement of any of the makes discussed, but isn’t the silver pigeon the cheapest gun Beretta make, their entry-level budget gun?

Yes although there's a rumour they may reintroduce the Onyx, but all 686 and 687 models from the same generation have exactly the same actions, barrels & chokes.
